While the beginning of the book was an interesting read with the author talking about Microsoft's hiring practices, the inner workings of the company and his experience at SoftImage, a company acquired by Microsoft, I felt that the book went downhill quickly from there.
At exactly page 146, I felt like I was reading a different book. Unfortunately, it was a book that I did not enjoy nearly as much as the first 145 pages. From this point onward, Mr. Barr felt the need to write a long drawn out essay about the history of the computer industry peppered with comments about how it affected Microsoft.
I have read this history countless other times in books much more entertaining and comprehensive (i.e. Fire in the Valley) than this book.
The author supposedly worked on two different versions of Windows NT and Windows 2000, but there was no talk whatsoever of what it was like to work on those teams. I definitely expected more information about what specifically went on inside Microsoft (from an insider's point of view) rather than Microsoft's relation to the industry which is public knowledge.

Proudly Serving My Corporate Masters: What I Leaned in Ten Years As a Microsoft Programmer is a reflection on a decade spent working at the countryÂ’s largest software company. The book views Microsoft from a unique angle: that of an insider who feels that Microsoft has done many good things, but is also unsure about some of its methods. The book offers a new viewpoint on Microsoft, challenging existing assumptions about why the company has succeeded, what it does well and what it does badly, and what it needs to do in the future.

Solid Code Review

Solid Code
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Poor value, watered-down treatment of topics, rehash of past material.
John Robbins gives a great foreword however, and the cover design is great with nice chapter quotes.
Visual Studio 2008 Team System is the minimum required software to work with the code.
Where's the beef? "Designing for Scale" was such a promising chapter, but instead offered platitudes and hardly solid advice. "Choose Scalable Application Designs: Design simple application architectures, Design to scale out, Partition data effectively..." And "Design Application Infrastructure to Scale: Load balance hardware..."
Disappointing title, as Writing Solid Code from 1993 was such a great (and aptly titled) book.
Better books IMHO:
* Code Complete 2 by Steve McConnell
* Rapid Development by Steve McConnell
* Secure Coding by Mark C. Graff and Kenneth R. van Wyk
* Writing Solid Code by Steve Maguire (uses only C however)
* Pragmatic Programmer by Andrew Hunt, David Thomas
See for yourself, hopefully at your library or bookstore.

This is a great little muffin book packed with over 100 delicious foolproof recipes. About half are for muffins. Although some exotic ingredients are used, most of the recipes are quick & easy to make. Recipes have between 3-6 grams of fat, though most contain 4-5 grams. This may seem a little high, but the muffins are a bit larger than most. Baking papers are filled to top, producing nice round muffins. Recipes include a wide variety of muffins including those with fruit, savory ones, & coffee cake style. Scones, waffles, hotcakes, breakfast breads, syrups & spreads are also included. The days of the stay-at-home mother who has nothing to do but wait around for the kids to come home from school and her husband to come home from work are long gone (if they ever really existed to begin with). These days most mothers are juggling the kids, at least a part-time job, after school activities, and most of the domestic chores. So, how does she provide for dinner without resorting to the local fast food drive through each evening? The answer to that question is in this cookbook.
The recipes are delicious and you would never know that the cook didn't spend hours in the kitchen preparing it. I say "the cook" because the recipes are easy enough that even I can prepare them. This makes it perfect not only for the frantic mom preparing dinner but also the frantic college student, or anyone else with a desire for a good meal but a shortage of time to prepare one. Some of my favorites include Fragrant Lemon Chicken and Potatoes, Chicken Stir Fry, Caribbean Chicken (for those who like spicy foods), Calypso Red Beans and Rice, Double Baked Cheddar Cheese Torpedoes, and Double-Chocolate Bread Pudding.
One of the things I have to comment on with this book is that it is in ring-bound form, which allows it to lie flat while you use it for cooking. While Champion Press, Ltd. has a wide variety of specialty cookbooks most of them are not spiral or ring bound or anything similar and so are tough to keep open when preparing the food. This one is an exception and is a highly recommended cookbook.

MOVE OVER JUNE & WARD CLEAVER--- THE FRANTIC FAMILY IS HERE!Ward and June Cleaver don't live here anymore. They're icons of a bygone era—an era where housewives wore girdles and pearls to vacuum the living room. Where dinner took two hours to make and the kids walked home from school to freshly baked cookies and a glass of milk.Fifty years later, Mom most likely has a demanding job as well as a whole slew of responsibilities—like carpool, schlepping kids to lessons and practices as well as feeding that same hungry family every night. She's most likely the one who does everything from grocery shopping to taking the dog to the vet. She's Mom, capital M. The Frantic Family Cookbook is designed with this family in mind. The author comes from the same reality and recognizes what it is to be a harried family still wanting to serve a healthy meal come dinnertime. The Frantic Family Cookbook is fun, humorous and sprinkled with tips and kitchen insight. All the recipes in Frantic Family are tasty, quick and (mostly) healthy, with the added benefit of being cost-conscious.

Trustworthy Systems Through Quantitative Software Engineering Review

Trustworthy Systems Through Quantitative Software Engineering
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, this is certainly a much different type of software engineering textbook than I have seen in the last score of years ☺! I was a reviewer of early editions of Pressman, and a user of every edition since the second one at four different universities. Shooman's classic 20+ years ago is another early data point for a graduate course. The Software Engineering Lectures of Tom DeMarco and Ed Yourdon from 1979 are still shelved six feet away from me, and have been referenced in every undergrad and graduate software engineering related course I have taught since 1984. The same shelves contain Pfleeger, Leach, Lethbridge, Peters, Watts & Humphrey, Sommerville, Thayer and many others within the combined 12 foot lineal span. They obviously are used, but not to the extent of Pressman.
That may be about to be changed! Larry Bernstein's new text states on page 32 ".. none of these [principles of sound organizations] will work unless our profession recognizes the next core element in the evolution of software processes as a fundamental principle. Software trustworthiness is the next major area in which academic and industry must focus -- both for national security reasons as well as to ensure that the U.S. software industry maintains its leadership. The three attributes of software reliability, security and safety comprise trustworthiness."
I totally agree with the belief about where we should focus our attention in coming years, but not for the reasons that Larry cites. Let me explain:
*Having worked as a software/knowledge engineer on the Space Shuttle program for Rockwell International for four years, including the maiden flight of Discovery within a few months of my hire date in 1984, I am a very firm believer that the trustworthiness of the software in the shuttle and all the support effort was a gold standard at the time. I was also a full-time professor of CS concurrently, so could bring such issues to all of my classes. Although I have given up my dream of going to the moon, hatched when my small team of high school students fired off rockets in a farmer's field prior to Sputnik, I still hope to make it to the international space station, so a trustworthy system is not only of academic interest! In the last 20+ years, the ubiquity of computing, particularly embedded systems in all modes of transportation, makes such a standard a MUST, not just "nice to have" in our cars, trucks, planes, etc. When a team of Ford software engineers showed up in my office 10+ years ago, asking for help in developing safe software systems for next generation side impact sensors, I could not brush off their concerns! Obviously, software systems pervade the lives of many of the 6.6 billion people residing on this planet today, not just the billion or so who access the Internet. It is irresponsible, not to mention a direct violation of codes of ethics for computing and software engineering, NOT to develop such trustworthy systems.
*I cannot agree with Larry's rationale about the leadership of the U.S. in software. Trustworthiness of software systems knows no national boundaries! Other engineering artifacts do not know such artificial boundaries - do we want the bridges and high rise buildings of Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America, Africa, etc. to be less safe, reliable and secure than those in the United States? I think not, if for not other reason than millions of our citizens travel to and live in those countries every day. Clearly, the lives of people across the world are just as valuable as those fortunate enough to live in our 50 states. The state-of-the-art in engineering methods is being advanced on a world-wide basis - why should we think software engineering education is somehow an exception? I would hope that this new text would be published in many languages and used by students and practitioners worldwide. I had first met Professor Bernstein on November 30, 2000 during my sabbatical to set up an International Software Engineering University Consortium (www.iseuc.org). So Larry clearly knows of my penchant for the world-wide importance of software engineering ☺!
Why do I think this new text is different from earlier ones and would recommend strongly that all current faculty and practitioners consider it carefully, especially for an introduction? The rationale includes the following. The text:
1.Focuses on the increasingly vital role that trustworthy software systems will play in the lives of current and future generations. Consequently, it is quite easy to engage or "hook" students in an introductory software engineering course about the importance of the topic - they see the impact of the lack of such systems on a weekly, if not daily, basis. Many of them will be able to share personal and professional experiences. The marvelous column by Neumann in every copy of ACM's SIGSOFT Software Engineering News provides ample examples, in any case.
2.Is cleverly written with excellent and realistic case studies with real questions and answers
3.Draws on the demonstrated expertise of the primary author when he was the CTO for Bell Labs
4.Truly demonstrates the rationale for the role of quantitative software engineering methods throughout the development life-cycle, beginning on page 4!
Reliabilty = e-k?t, where k is a normalizing constant, ? is complexity/(effectiveness x
staffing) and t is the time the software executes from its launch.
5.Emphasizes the "why" as well as the "how"
6.Includes excerpts from student teams related to the growing use of Real Projects for Real Client Courses - RPRCC-in software engineering and other courses
7.Covers most of the topics in a traditionally-structured software engineering text, but does so in a more contemporary and intuitive way. Some of the topics in other texts that wind up at the end, hence often not covered, are main-line chapters in the Bernstein text*. The newest edition of Sommerville's text does indeed have a 20-page chapter 3 on "Critical Systems" and a complete 120 page Part 4 on the same topic, but this is certainly an anomaly among current texts. The Bernstein text emphasizes trustworthiness as a continuing theme throughout, with the continual use of quantitative measures - witness the large number of "Magic Number" boxes for empirical results and heuristics contained in virtually each chapter. I admit that there would be a "learning curve" for most of us, but hey, aren't we supposed to be paragons for "life-long learning" that we espouse for our students?
8.Has fewer pages than virtually every other text. This is a real advantage. Students (and faculty) feel they have a "prayer" of being able to use the material in one course!
9.Has nice on-line support site.
10.And, finally, Larry will go to great personal lengths to support his text ☺!
A couple of possible sources of improvement for the second edition would include the following:
1.Include Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) as a major component when designing critical systems. This is a common engineering tool that was used in the design and testing of the Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSME) over the last 30 years.
2.How can the vital concept covered in the text be applied to the massive task of rendering trustworthy the extant base of millions of software systems? The text does a superb job for developing such systems, but can trustworthiness be "bolted on" existing systems? I doubt it, but cannot see an easy answer here.
3.A friendlier website for both instructors and students would be helpful, ala those for other software engineering textbooks
*Topics in the text
Part I. Getting Started
1.Think Like an Engineer - Especially for Software
2.People, Product, Process, Project - The Big Four
Part II. Ethics and Professionalism
3.Software Requirements
4.Prototyping
5.Architecture
6.Estimation, Planning, and Investment
7.Design for Trustworthiness
Part III. Taking the Measure of the System
8.Identifying and Managing Risk

A benchmark text on software development and quantitative software engineering"We all trust software. All too frequently, this trust is misplaced. Larry Bernstein has created and applied quantitative techniques to develop trustworthy software systems. He and C. M. Yuhas have organized this quantitative experience into a book of great value to make software trustworthy for all of us."-Barry BoehmTrustworthy Systems Through Quantitative Software Engineering proposes a novel, reliability-driven software engineering approach, and discusses human factors in software engineering and how these affect team dynamics. This practical approach gives software engineering students and professionals a solid foundation in problem analysis, allowing them to meet customers' changing needs by tailoring their projects to meet specific challenges, and complete projects on schedule and within budget.Specifically, it helps developers identify customer requirements, develop software designs, manage a software development team, and evaluate software products to customer specifications. Students learn "magic numbers of software engineering," rules of thumb that show how to simplify architecture, design, and implementation.Case histories and exercises clearly present successful software engineers' experiences and illustrate potential problems, results, and trade-offs. Also featuring an accompanying Web site with additional and related material, Trustworthy Systems Through Quantitative Software Engineering is a hands-on, project-oriented resource for upper-level software and computer science students, engineers, professional developers, managers, and professionals involved in software engineering projects.

I had bought Sally Sampson's "The $50 Dinner Party", and was so impressed at how easy and accessible the recipes were. I had given 7 dinner parties by the time her "bake sale" cook book came out, and although I'd never baked so much as one cookie, I decided to try it. I was most successful with her brownies. They were very easy to make, and delicious. I've tried several other recipes and they were also delicious. I intend to try ever one in the book, at the risk of putting on a pound or two. I intend to launch into a big baking attack for Christmas, and I know I'll be a big success. I saw Sally Sampson on Bryant Gumbel's show and could not get over how efficient and adorable she was.

Manage Software Testing Review

Manage Software Testing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have read many testing books and this book surely has lots of material which is not covered elsewhere. However, the book frustrates you when you try out the examples or try to figure out what to do and what to leave out (theoretical). Those trying to learn things not offered in regular books can find this insightful.
Be warned that many ideas are not practically implementable - for example 18.10.6 - Bug seeding model where we deliberately insert bugs in code to estimate the # of defects. This is NEVER done in real life (my experience) since we have difficult time doing the actual project and eliminating the real bugs. The author does not warn you of this. There are many other cases where the author should warn you if its theoretical or practical some examples -
(1) Section 18.2.1 (Revised) Propagation Analysis Algorithm - Not possible in real software development with deadlines.
(2) 18.2.5 Revised Execution Analysis Algorithm
The author should have given the data and XLS in his blog (very difficult to locate) so that the readers can use the information. I vainly tried the example in 18.3.1 How to Calculate Influences on Performance and was so frustrated thathe changed the columns between figure 18.2 and 18.3 and gives so much data in 6th decimal (making it useless for the readers when we are not able to follow).
On the positive side - there are a lot of insight in terms of reliability covered here. The references are very good and useful. It should have more stars if the XLS were provided or examples made more understandable.

Whether you are inheriting a test team or starting one up,
Manage Software Testing is a must-have resource that covers all aspects of test management. It guides you through the business and organizational issues that you are confronted with on a daily basis, explaining what you need to focus on strategically, tactically, and operationally.
Using a risk-based approach, the author addresses a range of questions about software product development. The book covers unit, system, and non-functional tests and includes examples on how to estimate the number of bugs expected to be found, the time required for testing, and the date when a release is ready. It weighs the cost of finding bugs against the risks of missing release dates or letting bugs appear in the final released product.
It is imperative to determine if bugs do exist and then be able to metric how quickly they can be identified, the cost they incur, and how many remain in the product when it is released. With this book, test managers can effectively and accurately establish these parameters.

Mastering Software Quality Assurance: Best Practices, Tools and Techniques for Software Developers Review

Mastering Software Quality Assurance: Best Practices, Tools and Techniques for Software Developers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just finished reading a new book by Murali Chenmuturi; "Mastering Software Quality Assurance", subtitled "Best Practices, Tools and Techniques for Software Developers". My first reaction is that the audience of the book should be enlarged from Software Developers to `their managers, team leads and anyone else involved in software development'.
I found the book to be a comprehensive look at quality assurance, its history and evolution from quality control to quality assurance and applicability to software development. There are discussions on quality in specifications, design, construction and conformance (which the author describes as `how well an organization conducts the activities that ensure that quality is built into a deliverable'). Other perspectives of quality covered in the book are; the organizational environment needed to foster quality, verification, validation, product quality and process quality. In addition to the discussions there are a number of process flows as well as checklists, templates and guidelines, some within the chapters and others as appendices. The presence of these items makes the book a nice combination of theory and practical help.
Murali Chemuturi also has a couple of interesting proposals, one a composite metric to measure the quality of a software product, that takes into consideration both organizational aspects as well as actual activities on the project. The other is `a new paradigm for software quality assurance' based on the author's disillusion with ISO certifications and CMMI ratings. While there is some truth in the criticism voiced, the proposed new paradigm would have its own set of issues and potential for misuse. Still it is always good to be aware of the negative aspects of current practices.
The author definitions of some types of testing, e.g. System testing, Regression testing, Retesting surprised me, but given that there is as yet no globally accepted definitions of many software concepts, the fact that I only reacted to three of the over 20 different types of testing is probably a good sign.
In conclusion I definitely recommend this book to anyone working with, or interested in software quality - with a caveat, do not implement anything exactly as in the book, rather use the material as a starting point and customize it to your own culture and needs.

The Complete IT Recruitment Survival Guide Review

I think Ayub did a good job giving an overview and general history of IT. It's knowledge that will set you apart as a technical recruiter.
The book has a pleasant, easy-to-read tone, although you will notice some typos and misspellings. I was excited to finally find a recent publication that gives an overview of IT. It wasn't too technical, but also not too dumbed-down. I actually found the book quite interesting and enjoyable to read.
I would recommend this book to any corporate or staffing recruiter, no matter what their knowledge base is. I think it is a very helpful guide.

Ayub Shaikh is a renowned trainer, famous for having brought credibility, confidence and industry knowledge to over 5,000 IT recruitment consultants, HR professionals and resourcers through his training courses around the world. In the past Ayub himself was an accomplished IT recruiter in the financial heart of London and is now a mentor to some of the world's largest IT recruitment consultancies. His company Holistica Consulting is the world's only training company dedicated purely to teaching IT recruiters and resourcers all they need to know about the various IT vertical markets such as SAP, JAVA, C#, and Telecoms. Without doubt there is nobody more suited to writing the world's first 'survival guide' for the IT Recruitment industry. Each chapter is written with recruitment relevance in mind, and includes Interview questions and further techniques to help match candidates to jobs. This is a hugely significant work for the IT recruitment industry, but do not be daunted (those of you who are squeamish about IT jargon and terminology). Those who have attended Ayub's training will immediately relate to the uniquely simple, passionate and even humorous ways in which he puts across very complex IT concepts and principals. And his now famous easy-to-understand teaching style continues into this ground breaking book. IT knowledge is delivered in a reassuring and relaxed way; and the stories, trivia, and anecdotes flow throughout. This is an instruction manual like no other. Testing Applications on the Web: Test Planning for Internet-Based Systems Review

Testing Applications on the Web: Test Planning for Internet-Based Systems

This is good book. If you test web apps, you should buy it.
Hung Nguyen and I are co-authors of another book and good friends. I am not an unbiased reviewer. On the other hand, I wouldn't write this review if I didn't believe every word of it.
Hung's book breaks new ground. It will be useful today, and I believe it will have lasting value and influence.
Once you get beyond the superficial (not unimportant, but much less difficult) issues of usability testing that dominate so many discussions of web testing, you run into the really tough problems of web application testing. Hung Nguyen's book is about those harder problems.
The web-based application runs on a wider range of platforms than any other type of program in history. It doesn't even have control over its presentation layer (the user supplies the browser and the multimedia plugins, and these applications might change any time). What will the application look like on the changed browser? The application probably also relies on third party databases (which can change any time), third party network connections (which can change any time), third party security systems and other access control (which can change any time), etc., etc. Almost anything in this system can change any time. How do you deal with a system that has so many unknowns?
Hung's view is that web application testers must learn more about the technical details of the systems and understand how external variables can interact (and fail) with the application under test.
To help testers learn about the interaction (and testing) of applications with other system components, he wrote the field's first book on grey box testing.
This book has substantial value for what it teaches us about testing on the web. Beyond that, it teaches about thinking clearly and thoroughly when your application interacts in complex ways with other systems. I think his approach will have lasting value and lasting influence long after many of the detailed issues that he describes have been resolved and replaced with new ones.
Along with the original approach, Hung gives a powerful real-world example. He is the president of a company that publishes a web-based bug tracking system. To illustrate the types of tests that you can run and the types of bugs you can find, he opened his records and described real tests, real bugs, and real testing problems. It's a rare treat to see a discussion of testing experience by someone who knows testing, who also intimately knows the software under test, and who isn't constrained in what he can say by a nondisclosure contract.
