This book is well organized, easy to read and has wonderful diagrams and illustrations. I think it's a great addition to any acupuncture practice - especially if you practice Japanese acupuncture, treat athletes or like to get your patients involved in their own healing process (by assigning "homework" to patients - stretches, exercises, etc., to help speed recovery and prevent re-injury).

The meridian test (or M-test) is a powerful assessment, treatment, and self-care system that can be used to improve athletic performance and physical fitness. It simplifies the assessment of strain and injury so that even nonacupuncturistsand athletes can learn to apply massage and stretching more effectively.The M-Test is one of the most popular methods of sports acupuncture in Japan. Developed by Mukaino Yoshito, M.D., of the Sports and Health Science Department at Fukuoka University,the M-Test is based on his extensive experience inphysical education and sports medicine. The M-Test uses the meridian system of acupuncture to analyze the movements of multiple joints and muscles in a holistic way. I decided to take the exam after 1 year of on and off exposure to work as a medium to large sized LAN technician. I figured I probably knew most of what was necessary for the exam, but wasn't sure. I picked up this book and spent a week going through it and taking the practice exams on the CD. I found I was solid on the Microsoft stuff and somewhat ignorant on the Mac, UNIX, Linux stuff. I was glad I picked up the book. I took the test today and passed with a comfortable 87%.
So, if you're not sure whether you're ready to take the exam, this is a good book to pick up. This book will not teach you everything you need to know, but it will certainly expose you to the topics you have to be familiar with. I combined the lessons in the book with some research on the internet, and I passed with one week's preparation. If you're completely new to networking, I would suggest buying a full-blown self-paced course. This book will not teach you everything (It doesn't claim to though).
My one and only criticism of this text is that it is a little Microsoft-centric. Please be aware that the Network+ exam covers Windows, UNIX, Linux, and Apple. The book tells you this, but it drops hints to get you to buy a copy of Windows 2000 Server.

Penetration Testing and Network Defense, written for network security professionals, has strong disclosures that warn against the temptation to try some of the techniques taught in the book without written permission from those who own target systems. If you have been administering a network or consulting, you will already be familiar with much of the contents of the book. However, the book saves the reader the time of going many places to acquire all this information.
There are a few non-technical parts to the book. Chapter 4, Performing Social Engineering, should be ready by practically everyone who works with computers or lives in the information age for that matter. The authors almost had me thinking like a criminal. But this is a necessary exercise to stay one step ahead of the bad guys. Appendix A walks the reader through preparing a security policy.
Most of the book is written directly to those who already have a working knowledge of networking and the TCP/IP protocol. For over 10 chapters the authors cover many techniques for stealing data or taking down a network. The perspective of this guide flips flops from hacker to security administrator. Many new features in systems today are highlighted, such as Flood Defender for Cisco PIX firewall. All of the best tools are listed, both free and commercial, for evaluating the security of a network.
I give this guide five stars because it is easy to read and has excellent real world examples. I learned several new things and got some old questions answered. The book reinforces one of life's most important lessons I try to teach my kids. Respect other people: respect other people's things.

The Wicket framework itself is good, but this book is not. I've read an early access copy of Wicket in Action which does a much better job. Buy that instead.

Electric Motor Maintenance and Troubleshooting Review

(More customer reviews)I had this book on backorder for three months, eagerly anticipating new ideas, new methods of testing, and more. Having been in the electric motor industry, from being a motor repair journeyman in the US Navy to in-depth research into motor repair and testing at universities and for utilities, for about 20 years, I have seen major changes to the industry since the early 1980's.
The information in the book is the same old thing in a new cover. I see no difference between this book, previous books by the author, and my early 1950's copy of "Preventive Maintenance of Electrical Equipment" by Charles L Hubert. Basically, the book would make a great history lesson on testing from the early 1900's, while lacking in new test options that have come out over the past 25 years. The recommended 'smoke tests' and dangerous high voltage tests can be avoided these days, and are dangerous in their own right (safety issues).
There are quite a few technical issues with the book. For instance, surge testing is related as an 'inductance-based test' which is incorrect. It is actually an impedance-based test.
While new instruments have been available for the past 25 years, that are affordable, none of those technologies are mentioned. And in one area, the author offers his opinions on new technologies and what they detect, but does not provide information to allow the reader or student to make their own decisions. For instance: "Uneven air gap - a test claim - can't be detected from the three leads of a three phase motor. (Although it isn't desirable, an uneven air gap won't destroy a motor's winding.)" - Whereas, air gap problems are detected by inductance, and impedance, because of changes to the electrical circuit (this author cannot change the laws of physics), and, while it has a minimal effect on the windings, it has a pronounced effect on the mechanics of the motor, which is why air gap is important when assembling motors, and when troubleshooting with vibration (eccentric rotor vibration).
I am, to put it mildly, disappointed.
