Freedom From Oil: How the Next President Can End the United States' Oil Addiction Review

Freedom From Oil: How the Next President Can End the United States' Oil Addiction

This is an important and timely book. David Sandalow is to be commended for writing a well-researched, non-partisan book that offers a candid assessment of our addiction to oil; the adverse consequences that flow from that addiction, and a realistic assessment of various policy options regarding liquid fuel substitutions that could, and should, be vigorously pursued by the next administration.

The introduction of "Freedom From Oil" makes several important points, whic include:
"First, oil is everywhere. Everyone reading this book will use oil-directly or indirectly-in the next day.
...Second, drivers have no substitutes for oil.
....Third, our political dialogue about oil is stuck in the 1970s, focusing on just one part of a larger problem.
....To become independent of foreign oil, we must become independent of oil. That doesn't mean no oil in our vehicles. It means giving drivers a choice between oil and other fuels.
This conclusion is not radical. Experts across the political spectrum have been saying it, in different ways, for many years. But it has not permeated our political dialogue on the topic of oil.
Which leads to a forth insight: Ending oil dependence will require political leadership.
The changes required to end oil dependence are far-reaching. Lead times are long. Many current proposals are far too small. For the scope of change needed to solve this problem, presidential leadership is essential." (pg. 4)
From there Sandalow write a hypothetical memo from the President states: "I plan to deliver an address from the Oval Office one month from today. The topic will be oil dependence." Freedom from Oil then proceeds with a dozen or so memorandums from various cabinet-level members and top advisors (i.e., national security, enviroment, economic, etc). The book also includes some interesting interviews from real-life individuals. The hypothetical format of the book is slightly unorthodox, but it is very effective given general theme of the book - what would happen if the next President made breaking the United States' addiction to oil a top priority?
In Part I, Sandalow defines "The Problem" by writing a memorandum by a fictitious U.S. president who is requesting a holistic analysis of our oil addition from all of his cabinet members. Sandalow repeatedly notes that that the U.S. consumes approximately 24% of the world's oil production, yet has only 2% of the world's reaming oil supply. In addition, he notes that 96% of our transportation fleet is utterly dependent on oil, and that there are virtually no (scaleable) substitutes currently available, at least not in the short-term.
Part II of this book outlines possible "Solutions" to the oil addiction. This includes a candid analysis of the various policy and technology alternatives: Plug-In-Cars, Biofuels, Fuel Efficiency, Coal, Hydrogen, Smart Growth, Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and Diplomatic Strategy. (Note: nuclear energy, photovoltaic/solar energy, and wind energy are not discussed in the text as they have effectively no impact on the transportation fleet in the short or immediate term - and are thus irrelevant unless we radidly move towards all electric vehicles).
Part II of the book is fairly comprehensive, but I do have a minor criticism regarding Biofuels. It is my perception that the author does not sufficiently explore the range of challenges involved with scaling-up U.S. liquid fuel production from ethanol and other biofuels beyond today's 4% of the total fuel mix.
In other words, while production of various biofuels could be ramped up to perhaps one-third of our gasoline consumption within a few decades (assuming hundreds of billions of dollars were immediately diverted towards this goal), there are some complicated issues regarding the price of food produced domestically, not to mention the potential adverse impacts on world poverty. (The author briefly mentions the "tortilla riots" that occurred in Mexico during 2006 due to the increase price of corn, which in turn was/is an artifact of increased corn production being diverted to ethanol production, but he seems to downplay potential impacts to domestic/U.S. food prices).
Despite this issue, I applaud Sandalow for his balanced approach regarding the issues surrounding alternative transportation fuels from coal, coal-to-liquids, and his candid assessment of the much-hyped "hydrogen fuels." (he notes the tremendous amount of raw energy required just to produce free hydrogen molecules, and the "astronomical costs" of converting our 169,000 gasoline stations and infrastructure for hydrogen transportation and storage, etc).
Part III of this book is called "Decisions," which offers several difficult yet realistic policy decision options for the next U.S. administration. These policies include significant changes in tax structure, mass transit funding, subsidies to the oil and gas industry, etc. Changes are required immediately. Let us hope that the current crop of politicians seeking the presidency in 2008 might actually debate the various energy policies suggested by Sandalow, as our addiction to oil is about to become a truly global crisis. Why?

Quite simply, the world oil production data over the past 2+ years increasingly suggests that we have entered a plateau in global oil production, which will ultimately be followed by an inexorable decline in global oil production. Many non-partisan experts in various non-profit entities such as ASPO and the UK-based Oil Depletion Analysis Center suggest 2010/11 as the tipping point, ergo, the next president will have to deal with this epochal moment in history.

My major criticism of Sandalow's book is that he does not even mention Peak Oil - despite this phenomenon (along with global climate change) being the "other inconvenient truth" as well as the primary driver of why we need to become "free from oil" - beginning yesterday. (fyi: Despite the massive increase in the price of oil over the past couple of years, according to the EIA data as of September 2007, it appears that the global production peak in regular crude oil + condensate occurred in May 2005 at 74,298,000 barrels per day, and that the global "all liquids" peak occurred in July 2006 at 85,540,000 barrels per day. The world is now producing 1.2 m/b/d less crude oil than it did 2 years ago, and 1.2 m/b/d less total liquiud fuels than it did 1 year ago. If we are on a plateau regarding global oil production, then a slow and permanent decline is on the immediate horizon).
To be sure, Sandalow's book is well researched (with plenty of footnotes that are worth reading), but it would have been more persuasive if he made some mention of the growing evidence that world oil production may be peaking. This issue should have been discussed in Freedom from Oil, and for this reason alone I am giving Sandalow's book four stars instead of five. (For those interested, I highly recommend the award-winning documentary film "A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash")
Despite this criticism, Sandalow correctly and effectively illustrates that the next several U.S> presidents will face very difficult challenges that will require considerable leadership - not to mention lots of sacrifice from the general citizenry. As Freedom from Oil makes clear, real presidential leadership is required in 2009 and beyond if we are to begin earnestly tackling the most difficult challenges that today's generation faces - our addiction to oil, and the long-term challenges stemming from global climate change.

Summarizing, this book should be required reading for all American citizens - and especially those who are seeking to become the next President - as nothing is more important at this stage in human development than beginning the long and difficult journey to free ourselves from our disastrous addiction to oil.

"I plan to deliver an address from the Oval Office one month from today. The topic will be oil dependence.”

With these opening words, Freedom from Oil takes the reader to the highest levels of government, as Cabinet members and White House aides debate how to break our addiction to oil. In a fast-moving narrative, David Sandalow shows how to solve this problem while offering a unique window into the White House at work.

A White House veteran, Sandalow explores what would happen if the next President made breaking the United States' addiction to oil a top priority. In crisp and clear prose, Sandalow explains the size of the challenge and then offers a powerful message of hope. "This issue unites Americans,” he writes. "Game-changing technologies are at hand.” Plug-in cars, biofuels and measures to improve traffic are all part of the solution.

Throughout the book, profiles of fascinating individuals help bring serious policy dialogue to life. From the commander of U.S. forces in western Iraq to a grandmother in northern Alaska to an electric car entrepreneur to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, Freedom from Oil is filled with stories of people whose lives have been touched by oil dependence-and are working to find solutions.

Drawing on both his government experience and energy expertise, Sandalow depicts the President's top advisers as they explore options, shape solutions and create national policy, culminating in an inspiring speech by the President to the nation.

This book does NOT teach how to implement and test a trading system. It is for very early begginers that have NO idea what system trading is and want a simple introduction a 12 year old could read. I am looking for a book to teach me how to professionally test and present my trading system to investors. This is not the book, in spite of the misleading title. Surviving the Top Ten Challenges of Software Testing: A People-Oriented Approach
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent review of the biggest recurring problems of the software testing world. As I read the descriptions of each of the 10 challenges, I was astonished at how many of the pitfalls I fall into on a regular basis. Perry & Rice don't just lay out what the challenges are - they also discuss how to meet each one. Each item on the list has its own chapter with sections on the impact on testing, solutions to the challenge, impediments to implementing the solutions, and helpful guidelines to creating a plan of action. This is without a doubt an excellent book for those of us in the trenches of software testing each day. (One bit of advice, though - if you're looking for a book on "how to do software testing", look elsewhere. Perry and Rice have other good books on the subject, but this one is really intended to help you step back from your daily testing work and see where you could improve on your approach to it.)

According to Ronin publishing: "Cocaine Handbook gives a closeup view of the illicit international cocaine trade, focusing on what happens at each stage as the product passes from cook to alchemist to dealer to user. Cocaine Handbook includes health and safety information, laws for all 50 states, and the location of testing labs and treatment centers. Cocaine Handbook describes in exact detail how samples are tested for common adulterants and impurities. Test and photographs show how unwanted substances are removed from street cocaine by the use of special refining procedures. All processes in Cocaine Handbook are made exceptionally clear by charts, tables, more than 110 photographs showing the lab tests step-by-step." This book was the basis for the much smaller book, Cocaine Consumer's Handbook, also by David Lee, which I am a huge fan of and wrote a review of. I haven't yet seen this book but based on the other one, I'll bet its great. Additionally, this book is recommended by Francis Moraes, Ph.d., author of three irreplaceable books on heroin and opiates. That's the best recommendation I can think of. Unless you want something paper in front of you, don't bother with this book. It is very short and 80% of the content is covered in the Getting Started manual. If you really just want to learn the basics of Jmeter I guess it would be a good book, but other than that it is not worth the crazy price of admission. The illustrations would done well and the font was nice and large - but that somewhat irritated me also, given how small the book was, so I felt I got more ripped off.

In Detail
A bad response time on a website can drive away visitors and prospective customers. To measure what a website can handle, there should be a way to simulate and analyze different load scenarios--this is where a load-testing tool like JMeter comes in. JMeter is a powerful desktop performance tool from the Apache Jakarta project, written in Java, for load-testing web pages, web applications, and other static and dynamic resources including databases, files, Servlets, Perl scripts, Java Objects, FTP Servers, and more.
JMeter works by acting as the "client side" of an application, and measures response time. As such, it's one half of the testing arsenal; the other half consists of a tool to watch metrics on the server side, such as thread counts, CPU loads, resource usage, and memory usage. Although it can't behave like a browser to measure rich client-side logic such as JavaScripts or Applets, JMeter certainly measures the performance of the target server from the client's point of view. JMeter is able to capture test results that help you make informed decisions and benchmark your application.
This book introduces you to JMeter (version 2.3) and test automation, providing a step-by-step guide to testing with JMeter. You will learn how to measure the performance of a website using JMeter.
While it discusses test automation generally, the bulk of this book gives specific, vivid, and easy-to-understand walkthroughs of JMeter's testing tools showing what they can do, and when and how to use them.
What you will learn from this book?

Why automating tests is so useful, and how it will help you to improve performance of your web sites and applications
Installing, setting up the environment, and running JMeter
Planning automated tests to provide a thorough insight into application performance, bottle necks, and load bearing capabilities
Building a test plan to test your websites
Test web, database, FTP servers and more - so you can get a detailed insight into which parts of your application are holding up performance
Build more complex test elements using regular expressions and functions
Capture, process, and analyse test results
Approach
This book is focussed on learning and understanding JMeter. It starts with a basic introduction and installation, followed by using JMeter to test web applications. It proceeds to show how to use JMeter to perform load testing and also to test the functional behavior of the target web application. The discussion continues to include testing servers other than web application servers, and demonstrates the use of some of JMeter's built-in functions. This book aims to give readers an introductory view of JMeter, and gives a brief and realistic overview to those researching for an ideal testing tool to use in testing projects.
The book is written in a straightforward, clear way, with plenty of step-by-step instructions and illustrative screenshots.
Who this book is written for?
The ideal readers or users of this book are experienced or novice testers who have been testing manually and now would like to automate their tests. Those testers who are already automating their testing using other tools or testing software may also want to use this book as they look for alternatives. This book would also be a good point for test Managers/Leaders to start doing research on the test automation tool that may best suit their testing needs and of course, their budget
JMeter's target audience is the testing community, which is generally not the hangout of developers or technical people. Almost anything one would like to do in HTTP testing will be supported by JMeter without requiring any programming.
The user need not have much technical knowledge to work with JMeter. It has a simple-to-use and intuitive drag-and-drop style GUI that helps any non-technical user to get started.

WarDriving and Wireless Penetration Testing Review

WarDriving and Wireless Penetration Testing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Disclaimer: I know the guy who wrote the forward, although I don't think in any way this has influenced my review of this book.
I'm not a wireless hacker, although I've dabbled some in examining networks and some of the software in the book. That said, I think I learned quite a bit by reading this book. I didn't know what to expect with "Wardriving & Wireless Penetration Testing", but what I found was a focused, well prepared book with clear examples. Now, this book is very heavy on network discovery and mapping and not as complete on wireless attacks, although this topic does get coverage in a full chapter and parts of others.
What I like about the book is that it's comprehensive without being exhaustive. It covers WiFi hacking from Windows and Linux, which you would expect, and also from OS X (not so common) and also from, very pleasantly, handheld devices. The software covered is mainly using Kismet/Kismac and the NetStumbler family of software, which is not unexpected. These are premier tools and offer everything you would want. Several minor tools are also discussed.
Various attacks covered include breaking the security mechanisms of WEP, WPA and LEAP, not surprisingly, and how to commit MITM attacks. In all of these, the instructions are clear and straightforward with clear illustrations.
Lest you think this book is all about software, there's good coverage of hardware, both wireless cards and adapters as well as antennas. Also, some GPS software and its integration with wireless mapping efforts is also covered in detail. Another surprise is the coverage of the OpenWRT software kit for the WRT54G device, which can easily be loaded into a functional, dedicated wireless pentest and attack tool. The authors provide valuable tips and insights along the way. A short "bonus" chapter on wireless video device hacking is also included. Appendix B covers driver static analysis and testing, which is becoming a hot topic right now in vulnerability research.
Screenshots, examples, and images were generally well done. A handful of Linux-specific screenshots (ie for the kernel configuration) were poorly reproduced, unfortunately.
While I'm not an expert at wireless (either the security protocols, the auth protocols, or the physics) I didn't spot any obvious mistakes in their background material.
I found "Wardriving & Wireless Penetration Testing" to be well written and full of useful information, all clearly and well presented. The authors have prepared a good, timely book on the subject, and cover the topic in full, sharing insights and tips along the way.

Wireless networking has become standard in many business and government networks. This book is the first book that focuses on the methods used by professionals to perform WarDriving and wireless pentration testing.Unlike other wireless networking and security books that have been published in recent years, this book is geared primarily to those individuals that are tasked with performing penetration testing on wireless networks. This book continues in the successful vein of books for penetration testers such as Google Hacking for Penetration Testers and Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit. Additionally, the methods discussed will prove invaluable for network administrators tasked with securing wireless networks. By understanding the methods used by penetration testers and attackers in general, these administrators can better define the strategies needed to secure their networks. * According to a study by the Strategis Group more than one third of the words population will own a wireless device by the end of 2008. * The authors have performed hundreds of wireless penetration tests, modeling their attack methods after those used by real world attackers. * Unlike other wireless books, this is geared specifically for those individuals that perform security assessments and penetration tests on wireless networks.

While looking for a digital testing textbook that was more accessible to students than the Abramovici "Digital Systems Testing and Testable Design" text, I came across this one and thought it would be the perfect answer. When my copy arrived I was sorely disappointed.
If you need a book to introduce you to what the various testing techniques are, this book does a wonderful job! Its discussion will surely be useful to the typical test engineer. However, if you want to really understand HOW the design techniques work and how to optimize them, this book truly lives up to its claim of "Skip the high-brow theories and mathematical formulas" --- you will receive very little help in your endeavor.
This book's usefulness depends on what your need is. In one case it is great; in another it is poor.

The purpose of this book is to introduce the basic concepts of test and design-for-test (DFT), and to then address the application of these concepts with an eye toward the trade-offs of the engineering budgets (area, frequency, power, etc.), the business drivers, and the cost drivers. This practical guide on the test and Design-for-test topics has been developed along the lines of a just what you need to know and how to do it guide that explains the topic, the trade-offs, and relates the topic to the design flow.

The Bug Review

Among other works, Ellen Ullman has previously written the non-fiction CLOSE TO THE MACHINE and "Programming the post-human: computer science redefines 'life.'" It was the gosh-wow aspects of these two works that convinced me to anticipate, seek, and read her first, vivid novel, THE BUG. (What an excellent metaphor! The 'bug' does more than double duty: there is the software bug, the bugs in Ethan's life, how Joanna bugs him, etc.)
The surprise? That someone who has spent the majority of her adult life writing code - you know, 1s and 0s, Boolean logic gates, etc - could so artfully employ the writer's art of metaphor, simile, misdirection, style, and a winking eye (always anathema when programming computers)! Within the novel, Ullman shares computer-programming arcana that could be, should be fodder for inducing sleep... yet isn't. Where do these writers come from? How do they do it - i.e., make it appear so easy?
And yet nothing adequately prepares the reader for THE BUG. Wow. Ellen Ullman breathes life into each character, especially core protagonists Ethan Levin and Roberta Walton. For example, as master-coder Ethan races to find and extinguish the bug in his software, he finally realizes that he must first de-code his life; unfortunately, he makes this 'vision quest' unaided and pays the price. And when things happen (to say more would be to divulge too much), all the birds come home to roost. Near novel's end, a dead-on comment made to Ethan from another character galvanizes him to action. His life will never be the same. Ullman has also excellently foreshadowed the novel's seemingly unexpected dénouement; her use of Conway's GAME OF LIFE as metaphor, as meaning, is both expert and masterful. The novel's theme resolves in a coruscating coda to the main story.
If you are uncertain about reading this novel, try the pages that begin Part 2 (pp 87-95); there is no inherent betrayal of the novel's secrets. Moreover, they were particularly fun to read, and redolent of the late 1990s.
What an assured, salutary debut. Highly recommended.
