(More customer reviews)I very much liked the book. Rex Black has written about the process and management side of testing. This makes it an ideal complement to Cem Kaner's "Testing Computer Software" (which deals with testing technique) and Boris Beizer's "Software Testing Techniques" (which deals with the fundamentals).
I found the templates useful, mostly because I never worked my way around Excel to get those metrics in an automated manner. But don't expect them to be replacement for commercial test management tools.
This should be a required reading for anyone who plans or manages testing.

Applied Software Project Management Review

(More customer reviews)I've tried many project management processes and have searched through most of the popular literature over the years trying to find the best way to implement real process change. Much of the literature describes the processes well but ignores the implementation entirely. Applied Software Project Management does a wonderful job both describing the various tools and techniques and giving detailed instructions on how to implement them. The book even goes so far as to describing how to implement processes in an organization that is openly hostile to change and/or process in general.
I find this book to be an invaluable resource for any project manager. It's great for newbies, who will learn all the vocabulary and process theory. Experienced project managers will learn new tools and techniques as well as innovatives ways of getting them implemented.

(More customer reviews)This books slashes through the old wive's tails and misinformation in which the subject of knife sharpening has been known to be shrouded. Juranitch teaches with authority, and gives specific instructions which with a little practice make it fairly straight forward to get knives amazingly sharp. He also recommends the guides and hones manufactured by his own company. Though a little skeptical, I bought some equipment and found its performance to bear out his claims. Amazon has been indicating for quite a while that the publisher is out of stock, however the book is available from the Razor Edge Systems website. (Amazon frowns on URLs in reviews so I won't include it, but you can probably get it on your first guess. Otherwise use a search enginge.)

Everything I've made from this book has received rave reviews. The day I made the apple walnut cake, two of my colleagues went out bought the cookbook for themselves. The caramel pecan brownies and the chocolate sour cream cake were also a hit. Also, the white chocolate macadamia cookies are much better than the ones at the mall cookie store. This book is a must have for every new bride!

I found it pitch-perfect in terms of demystifying the process, giving me plenty of very specific info in a conversational, easy-to-absorb format. I also applaud the humor and sense of balance - we all think our kids are special and daydream about what they'll achieve someday, but we don't want to push them too hard and rob them of the joys of just being a kid. I found it really reassuring that I'm already doing plenty right - and empowering to know what I can be doing in the months ahead to keep the ball rolling.
I highly recommend it.

(More customer reviews)This is a great book for testers, leads, and managers to read to get a better picture of where your testing process can bring value to your work. A few sections of this book didn't get me much value, but the vast majority of the book left me frantically scratching notes and folding corners of pages over. I read the book over a weekend and came away with a large number of major additions to my QA roadmap I use at work.
Kamran Khan's chapter on fuzz testing reinforced my ideas that choking your system with invalid parameters and input data is a tremendous way to shore up that system's stability. I also really enjoyed Lisa Crispin's and Alan Page's separate chapters, both of which emphasized value-driven, sensible approaches to test automation.
If you want an amazing story around how testing can directly impact the lives of those around you, read Karen Johnson's chapter "Software in Use." Johnson ties a visit to an Intensive Care Unit to work she'd done on equipment in that ICU - it's rare anyone sees that practical a link to work we do in this industry.
Other highly worthwhile chapters include the piece on Python's development process, the overview on TDD, Mozilla's regression testing philosophy, and others. The Python chapter, in particular, is a tremendous testament to how a rigorous testing philosophy can guarantee very solid releases even with a broad, distributed team of varying skills.
As my examples above point out, there's a great amount of broad-stroke value in the book; however, a wealth of smaller, critical points abound in various chapters as well. Some weren't phrased exactly like this, but I've taken away these other concept as well:
* Track the source of your bugs (test plans, exploratory, developer, etc.) and pay special attention to bugs found by customers. These "escapees" point to areas to shore up in your test plan.
* Mindmaps are a great way to brainstorm out your test plan or test areas.
* Use small tools like fuzzers to help create your baseline input data.
* 100% passing rates for your automated tests isn't reasonable. Investigating 100% of your failing tests to determine whether the specific failure matters is reasonable. (I already firmly believed this, but it was nice to see in print!)
* Using image comparison to check formatting.
This is one of the better books I've read this year, and it's absolutely worth adding to your shelf.

How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With Review

It covers all major areas of puppy development, looks at training and problems in an elementary way, and uses nice black and white pictures for illustration. I find that it does rely rather heavily on food as reward. I liked this book better than the Monks of Skete's Art of Raising a puppy because it's more practical, yet I think that you are even better of if you purchase Kilcommens Good owners, great dogs. Though a bit more expensive, you get what you pay for. To me, dog training books need to have the potential to be used daily as a guide. I consulted this book maybe 3 times, while I use the Kilcommens book almost every other day.
