(More customer reviews)This series contains thousands of schematics from a variety of sources. I'm quite sure that few, if any, were tested by the authors. However, based on the sources, most probably were tested by the originators. The explanations were sparse, and there were errors, some obvious. As such, these are probably not suitable for beginners. However, I find them to be very valuable, and I suspect that many experienced techs, engineers, hobbiests, and experimenters will as well. I often use part of one circuit as the seed of an idea for a circuit I am designing, with the end result bearing little resemblance to the original. These are filled with perhaps the most valuable of all resources - other people's ideas. I do wish the authors had been more careful to catch errors.

Assuming only that you have an acute interest in becoming part of the game software phenomenon, Adams shows you step-by-step how to break into this field as a programmer, artist, animator, audio technician, musician, writer, designer, tester, marketer, customer service rep, or even mailroom clerk.
The book begins with a wealth of fundamental knowledge, giving a history of interactive entertainment and a taxonomy of game software venues, including PC, home console, arcade, online, handheld device, "location-based" entertainment, and gambling equipment. Chapters explaining how the game industry functions and how games are produced--from idea through manufacturing--round out the very thorough treatment of fundamentals.
With the fundamentals under your belt, Adams explains how to get from here to there, wherever "here" is for you, and with "there" being a career in the game software industry. There is separate advice for those still in high school, those in college, and those currently in careers other than game software. Every major job in the game software industry is explained, and there are "day-in-the-life" sidebars for each, written by people actually holding those jobs. There is also specific, detailed information on what education you will need (which could be formal or self-taught) in order to do each of these jobs.
Lastly, Adams leads you through the job hunt and hiring process itself, explaining how to package yourself, how to find opportunities, how to interview, and--once you're hired--what legal issues pertain to the ideas that you create for your employer.
Peppered throughout the text are "war stories" and insider anecdotes from Adams and other game software professionals. You're left with the sense that you've been in the trenches all along, working alongside the best in the industry.
I found this book to be well organized, well written, informative, and genuinely interesting. It's about 300 pages, which I consider to be the perfect length for most books. Reading this book is like having a personal mentor show you the ropes carefully, methodically, and with respect.

I recommend trying the Stanley guide for wiring, which is the book I ordered when this one proved nearly useless. A beginner like me will be frustrated, and someone with some experience will be annoyed at wasting their money.

Ninja Hacking: Unconventional Penetration Testing Tactics and Techniques Review

(More customer reviews)Some of the other reviews have poked at this book for the ninja bits, but I think they're great. Some good history info is included and some pices on how you can take some of the concepts the ninjas used and make them work during pen testing. They also do a good job of covering pen testing in both the sense of attacking things over the network and actually physcially attacking or disrupting things at the same time or using one to set up a distraction for the other. There are definitely some things that are in this book that you won't see in other pen test books, due to them being dangerous or damaging to use. Some of the stuff that they talk about reminds me of the things that they did on that Tiger Team tv show that was around very briefly a few years back. Anyway, good book and I had fun reading it and learned some new tricks.

This would be a perfect resource for beginners but it could serve as a good reference for non-beginners as well. Tons of figures/tables to illustrate points. At times a little wordy. Small Diesel Engine: Service Manual Review

(More customer reviews)Summary: It seems to be an adequate specific reference for the engines it covers. It is not, however, a complete service manual, and it has mistakes and omissions. It is not the first book you should use if you are technically savvy but just learning about diesels.
My perspective: I have been working on two-stroke and four-stroke motors for years, but I have never worked on a diesel before. I bought the book to fix a Lombardini one-cyclinder engine (a model specifically covered by this book) that wouldn't start.
Example of an omission: I concluded that at least one problem was that the injector pump was not moving any fuel. In the section on the pump, it tells you how to remove the pump, but doesn't mention something I later learned about, an important warning: you have to be careful not to let the tappet spacer fall into the oil sump. (I later acquired a piece of a Lombardini manual, they expressed this warning in a simple, clear sentence.)
Example of "incompleteness" as a manual: It was time to explore the guts of the injector pump; a part that was obviously supposed to move wouldn't move. There is an exploded view of the pump in the book, but the section goes on: "It is recommended that injection pump be tested and serviced only by a shop qualified in diesel injection repair." It turns out this paragraph is all over the book. It turns out that most manuals recommend, or even warn, against opening up injector pumps. Fine. But I want a book that warns appropriately, then lets me go on learning; ruining my motor (after I've been warned) is my problem. Pumps and injectors are critical components and liable to trouble; a complete service manual would include at least disassembly, cleaning and inspection, and reassembly.
Example of an error: The exploded view of the injector pump, though apparently supplied by Lombardini ("Illustrations Courtesy Lombardini U.S.A., Inc." is at the bottom of each page in the section) is wrong, insofar as you can't put the parts together in the order shown. (In the subsequently acquired piece of a Lombardini manual it shows a different and more sensible order.)
The book has been helpful, but it's not complete. I'm glad I wasn't depending on this book to get me out of trouble... I'd be in deeper. It has been, however, useful as I work on my engine and learn about diesels.
For the generally experienced mechanic who is learning about diesels, I recommend as a companion "Marine Diesel Engines: Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repair" by Nigel Calder. It's the voice of experience and a good self-teaching guide.

So. the big question from companies and engineers is, "What book can I buy to get me started with advanced functional verification?"
This is the first book I have read that understands that companies and employees cannot just throw out their current verification methodology on Monday and start using advanced functional verification on Tuesday. This book begins by using ModelSim and code coverage, and each chapter progressively adds more AFV techniques. The book is written so that the user can determine how much AFV is appropriate for him/her and allows each user to remain at any step toward full AFV. For example, I liked the chapter that explained how I can start using assertion-based verification without upgrading the simulation software.
Unlike so many other SV/OVM books I have read, this book assumes the user wants basic knowledge of AFV and is a guide to understanding an AFV system. The other books assume one already knows the information provided in this book.
It is also very easy to read. I liked the fact that the chapters are short enough that one can easily read and finish a chapter while waiting for someone, on short bus trips, or in an airplane. The examples in the book are easy to understand and completely explained line-by-line, which I loved. The examples can also be downloaded.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to start using AFV. If you are an engineer who does not want to be left behind, get this book.
