Fiber Optics Installer and Technician Guide Review

Fiber Optics Installer and Technician Guide
Average Reviews:

As the publisher of the only weblog devoted solely to fiber to the home (...), from time to time I receive books to review. So here it is.
As fiber to the home gathers momentum, the need for skilled workers installing and troubleshooting fiber access networks is bound to increase. For the next 15-20 years this will be a well paying job with little fear of outsourcing. The technical publishing and training industries are starting to respond to the challenge with training materials, books, and courses.
Sybex has recently released a textbook titled "Fiber Optics, Installer and Technician Guide" written by Bill Woodward and Emile B. Husson. This book is designed as a study guide to help students pass the Fiber Optic Installer (FOI) and Fiber Optic Technician (FOT) certifications. To this end, the book has obviously succeeded, with questions at the end of each chapter and an accompanying CD-ROM with practice questions, exams, and a .pdf version of the book. Topics covered in the book include history of fiber optics, various aspects of fiber optic technology, a chapter on safety, sections on cabling, splicing and connectors, system design considerations, and testing and troubleshooting.
If one is not preparing for the exam, there is some information in the book that I have not seen in other text books. This includes a safety chapter detailing the hazards of various chemicals used in preparing fiber optic connections, some very thorough information on cabling used in access installations and the installation methods. Finally sprinkled throughout the book are sidebar sections called "Real World Scenario" with installation examples that the authors collected from their students "in the trenches".

Developed in partnership with the Electronic Technician's Association, this book covers the two leading fiber optics certifications: ETA's Fiber Optics Installer (FOI) and Fiber Optics Technician (FOT). In addition to a comprehensive self-study course, you'll get a solid foundation in fiber optics directly from the chairman of the ETA, who also serves as the committee chairman for FOI and FOT certification programs. The CD includes advanced testing program with two bonus sample exams, electronic flashcards, plus an electronic copy of the entire book. If you're preparing for the FOI or FIT certifications, or simply looking for a comprehensive reference guide to fiber optics, this is the one book you'll definitely want on your desk.

Safe and Sound Software: Creating an Efficient and Effective Quality System for Software Medical Device Organizations Review

Safe and Sound Software: Creating an Efficient and Effective Quality System for Software Medical Device Organizations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I decided to buy this book based on a review by Alan Madick:
"Safe and Sound Software focuses on product quality, an aspect of system development that is often overlooked but is critical to the software medical device market. The book is well organized and presented so as to drive home the importance of quality in a medical system.
...
The style of this book is consistent and easy to read. Within each chapter, the author provides relevant definitions, along with both recommendations and mandatory processes to follow as software is designed, coded, tested, and implemented. It provides ample discussion on risk management, which is critical to a business where risk and mitigation play such a prominent role. It also provides the reader with an overview of some of the more influential regulatory and compliance guidelines, such as FDA, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and a myriad of international standards that must be considered when marketing these products to the world.
Finally, the book provides a nice recap of the quality system guidelines."
My objective was to provide a complementary guide to my software testers and the first impression that I got is that this is a valuable resource.

This book provides information and recommendations to help regulatory affairs and quality managers and consultants of software medical device design and development organizations navigate the complex course of regulatory compliance, operational excellence, product quality, and customer satisfaction to create an effective and efficient quality system. Software organization executives, functional managers, and other interested coworkers can also utilize this book to secure a general understanding of the subject matter. Many consulting firms, industry associations, and educational institutions present regulatory and quality training opportunities to regulatory and quality students and professionals. However, most training events focus on specific topics or requirements, such as ISO 9000, FDA Quality System Regulations, Six Sigma, vendor qualification, and software design control. Regulations and standards typically provide concise statements of requirements, but not much more. This book fills that gap in information available to regulatory and quality professionals in the software medical device industry. The resultant operational management system outlined in Appendix A, the Software Medical Device Quality System Guidelines, provides these professionals with recommendations and considerations for implementing the potentially duplicative requirements in a manner that reduces the bureaucracy of the system and adds value toward satisfying the organization's objectives.Included on a CD-ROM accompanying the book is Appendix A, Software Medical Device Quality System Guidelines.

Is the Help Helpful? How to Create Online Help That Meets Your Users' Needs Review

Is the Help Helpful How to Create Online Help That Meets Your Users' Needs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book brings together many aspects of writing technical documentation, with the specific focus of writing online help. It's like "Managing Your Documentation Projects" (Hackos, 1994), but for online help projects, without assuming a large doc department or heavy-weight processes. The first chapter summarizes the help development process as an introduction to planning a project, including the benefits and pitfalls of each step. The later chapters each focus on a specific phase, task, or issue in the process. I'm perplexed by the complaints of "Unhappy Buyer" about the task-oriented headings and bullet points in "Is the Help Helpful?", as I found those to be among the most helpful features of this book.
The book does not assume you are using any particular help technology or help authoring tools (though these are summarized in an appendix). So, for example, while Chapter 6 covers issues in producing a table of contents and index, you may need to refer to other sources for instructions in how to implement them with the specific technology and tool you are using.
Many of the topics covered in this book are addressed in greater depth in other books; an appendix offers a list of references for further reading. To really understand all these issues, you would need to read several books. However, you could read all those other books, and still not get the focus on online help offered by this one.

Unfortunately, this edition repeats many of the inaccuracies of the first book. If you are an experienced woodworker, the measured drawings and photos are useful; but ignore the so-called historical notes. A number of the projects are reconstructions of reconstructions, so there are many leaps of faith that the design is authentic. For accurate information on period furniture joinery, decoration, etc., see Victor Chinnery's book "Oak Furniture, the British Tradition." For information on how to build furniture using hand tools in a period fashion, see Roy Underhill's "Woodwright" series of books.

Although there was some helpful information on item substitutions and explanations of specific foods and their cooking properties, I felt that overall the cookbook did not serve its purpose as a basic, general cookbook.
It says, "Over 300 easy-to-prepare recipes" but what they fail to tell you is that 250 of them are dessert-type recipes i.e. cakes, cookies, pastries, etc. The focus was not on nutritious meals for a main course. Most moms, I would think, are concerned about how they can make nutritious, yet simple meals for lunch and dinner that the whole family would enjoy. Since children with allergies have many nutrients removed from their diets due to often times several, severe food allergies, it is a challenge to find tasteful, yet nutritious recipes especially for toddlers. My least concern is how to make desserts for a 2 year old but rather how to teach her to enjoy a variety of healthy foods.
On a positive note, I think the cookbook would fare well if the title were different emphasizing the large percent of recipes focused on sugar and sweets.

How To Use Automotive Diagnostic Scanners (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

How To Use Automotive Diagnostic Scanners (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

After buying and reading this book cover to cover, I am little disappointed in some of the scan tool coverage. It does a good job of covering the nuts and bolts of obd1 and obd2, and giving you background on what they are and what they want to do. This is a great starting point as most driveability problems stem from the computer trying to keep everything within certain parameters, and what it can't do.
It has some great gems in it, which is always a plus, but it could go a little more in depth about what it actually is that you are looking at when you use the scan tool, and what fuel trim is, what it means, how to use the tool to get into the problem, etc.
I can never say that a book is a total letdown, because all automotive books have gems that a real mechanic can't ever say aren't useful, but this book won't give you the total definitive scan tool. But it is a great primer for those that have purchased one and are on their way to understanding and using one.

Testing and Quality Assurance for Component-Based Software (Artech House Computer Library) Review

Testing and Quality Assurance for Component-Based Software (Artech House Computer Library)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book provides a thorough and detailed discussion of the key differences between testing and QA for 'monolithic' or integrated software, and component-based software engineering.
The distinction is important because while the reason to go with a component-based approach is reusability and leveraging developer efforts across a number of applications or products can also introduce widespread problems across a range of systems. This book shows how to approach testing and QA in a manner that eliminates this problem. The approach itself includes validation methods that need to be rigorously applied, and a detailed quality assurance approach that includes testing, certification and verification after the validation layer is completed.
In addition to a coherent approach, the authors discuss specific methods, automated testing tools, testing frameworks, and specifics about test cycles that apply to component-based software. Overall, this book provides a complete picture of the differences between conventional and component-based software, challenges and solutions to meet those challenges.
While the value of this book will be readily apparent to anyone who is working in a component-based software engineering environment, it is also invaluable to the growing number of project teams and shops developing and implementing web services. There is much commonality shared between component-based software and web services, and the principles and approach given in this book will apply equally to both.

I bought two books and sent one to each family. One of my daughter in-laws runs a small day care in her home and I thought it might help to keep little ones busy besides her own two pre-school boys. She said the 36 month olds were a bit young however got something out of it and thought it would be good this spring outside. My other daughter in-law said although her two boys were young, she thought the book had great ideas and was going to keep it around and use as needed. I have two older grandchildren (12 &10) whom I use to answer questions when they were small that my answers surprisingly stuck I was told by them in later years. Books like this are great resources. This one gives pictures and is easy to understand. My second daughter in-law and I had a laugh, although she is English and a real gap in age, we both remember one of the activities from our childhood.

Risk Based E-Business Testing (Artech House Computer Library,) Review

Risk Based E-Business Testing (Artech House Computer Library,)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title of this book need not deter you. Yes, it is aimed at both Test Managers (the risk elements) and at web testers (the E-Business content). However, if, like me, you fall into neither category, it is still a very worthwhile addition to your reading list and workplace library.
The authors use very practical examples from real life testing to illustrate points. A continuous analogy of an individual E-Business being like a shop, with potential walk-in customers, works very well. Some rather startling facts emerge too; the average visit to the Systeme Evolutif web-site (of which Paul Gerrard is the web-master) is less than two minutes. I am sure that is true of a lot of sites, including those that are payment-now, real business sites.
Everyone in testing seems to promote 'risk'. Here is a strategy for answering the inevitable questions on ready-for-live issues based on whether risks have been addressed. "When enough tests have been prepared, executed and passed to convince the risk-owners that the risk has been addressed, enough testing has been done".
I have dabbled in web testing, both formally and informally (the latter probably every time I use the internet). The techniques for addressing real and perceived E-Business risks have a large carry over into other (i.e. non E-Business) test forms. The sections on performance, usability and Large Scale Integration rung some bells with me, and the use of tools is both encouraged, and discouraged. Strange as it may seem, the way of doing this did not seem to be contradictory. The sections on why the concept of E-Business is different only seeks to place MORE emphasis on why a coherent risk strategy is necessary. With web applications, not only is the time-to-market critical, but the price of failure can be so much more disastrous.
Use of American spelling and currency (everything is quoted in dollars) jars for the British reader, and look out for the words "we", "us", and "our". These are sometimes used a little ambiguously. (Ask who "us" refers to). However, expect to be challenged, and encouraged on to the land of better testing. There is a wealth of source material provided, especially on tools, and toll providers. There are lots of web-based references; additionally, a significant number of articles and books referenced are from 2001 or 2002.
The preface gives one of the reasons for the book being the ordering of the vast quantities of information that there is around. What was set out as an aim has been achieved, and both Paul and Neil have brought their experience, knowledge and communications skills to benefit us all. One of the dedications says: "To all those testers who do the best they can, but always think they should do more". I for one appreciate that the book was written for me. Thanks.

Developing Effective Websites: A Project Manager's Guide Review

Developing Effective Websites: A Project Manager's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are managing small-to-medium web projects, or are managing vendors who are implementing a small-to-medium site, this is an ideal book. What I like about this book is that it sticks to the basics and doesn't pretend to be a "silver bullet" or "killer methodology".
What it does do is step you through web site development, starting with the most important part: requirements, and from there through the development and management of a project plan. Here is where the book shines because the project planning starts with a work breakdown structure (WBS), which is essential to a viable project plan. Only after the WBS has been developed does the author cover scheduling. This is a refreshing change from other "project management" books that [erroneously] jump right into scheduling. Another strong point is the author covers cost estimation in a thorough manner.
This book is also complete from a workflow perspective in that roles and responsibilities of the project team are defined, and all project milestones are covered, including testing and maintenance, which are not always covered in web project books in any great detail. I especially like the way the author addresses contractor/customer relationships. If you are reading this as either a customer or a consultant this part of the book will prove valuable for advice and insights. Another key point that I like is the iterative development approach taken. This reflects the way most web projects proceed, although some books portray such projects as a linear waterfall process that leads to false project assumptions.
This book and "Web Redesign: Workflow That Works" by Kelly Goto and Emily Cotler complement one another. I recommend getting both if your budget allows it. If you are faced with a large-scale web project this book may not fit your needs as well as "Web Project Management: Delivering Successful Commercial Web Sites" by Ashley Friedlein. Regardless, this book is well written and is a refreshing change from many I've read because it's based on tried and true project management principles that have been closely integrated into the workflow of website development.
