(More customer reviews)I've worked as a handyman for 18 years, doing a variety of home repairs, including electrical work. One area where I've always been stymied is in troubleshooting residential electrical systems to find causes of problems beyond those obviously caused by a breaker or bad device, or problem located within the device that is dead. I do not have the training of an electrical contractor, so often I've had to give up and tell the homeowner to call in an electrical contractor because I can't find the cause of the problem. I've looked into many texts and electrical how-to books, but they generally only give information on planning an entire electrical system, or installing systems, circuits or devices. Before finding this book, I have looked in vain for a book that actually went into TROUBLESHOOTING of existing systems. I would never have known, for instance, that a breaker can be tripped while looking like it is on. Or that the cause of a white wire showing hot, may be an open neutral somewhere in the circuit. NOw, there may be a few more things I can handle in my work, saving the owner money so they won't have to call in an electrician who charges twice as much or more than I do as a handyman. THis book gives a well-organized way to detect problems in residential electrical systems that is treated nowhere else, and presented in a readable, well-illustrated, anecdotal fashion. It is suitable for homeowners with little electrical experience, though it certainly helps to get your "hands on" to understand some of the concepts discussed in the book, such as methods for wiring 3-way switches.
