They are the unusual - yet delicious - ingredients included in the makings of an Applesauce Chocolate Cake (#44) and a Chocolate Orange-Flavored Cake with Hazelnuts (#138). They are but two of the unique recipes found in 1001 Chocolate Treats. First of all, the names of the various cookies, pies, cakes and ice creams alone can make you mad with anticipation, but the full-color illustrations of the treats are what propelled me out the door in search of an all-night supermarket stocked with kiwi fruit in the middle of March! Pictures are important. As one ancient Chinese proverb puts it: "If it don't pass the eye test, it will never make it to the taste test." (Actually, my mom used to say that - and, yes, she is Chinese.) However, the photos aren't so sophisticated that you feel as though you have to have a degree in culinary arts in order to try out the recipes in your own kitchen. They look like treats that anyone's grandmother can make - it's just that we may never have thought of using sourdough crumbs in a chocolate cake before. And if cakes don't do it for you, how about a slice of Chocolate Cherry Truffle Pie (#580) or White Chocolate Pie (#645-my favorite)? In any case, the book is definitely a delight to read and the recipes, easy to follow. Chocolate- lovers would do well to add it to their collection. Actually, there are 1010 recipes in the book. Apparently, the editors had a hard time deciding which recipes to exclude. You will see why.
