First off, I think that publishing pages from Wikipedia in book form is an interesting idea, if for no other reason than it gives the reader something solid to hold, and that something will be always be available when a computer and Internet connection isn't. Besides, it's easier to write notes in the margins of a real book than it is to annotate a live web page.
Where this book fails miserably is in its total lack of illustrations. The publisher claims that they don't include them because they can't verify ownership of the images. When the source material comes from Wikipedia the associated images are clearly tagged with ownership and copyright information, so I have a hard time accepting that claim. It's not that hard to set up pages with images (it's called typesetting, and even MS Word can do an acceptable job of it in the hands of a skilled user), and it's not that hard to list the image credits in the back. Even contacting the rights holders for permission isn't hard to do, and if it's a corporation they will often agree let the image be used at no charge in order to get the free advertising and market exposure.
So, the bottom line here is that you're not buying anything with any real added value, and if you happen to own a duplex capable laser printer, you can download the material from the web and print it yourself. With the images intact.

To Love Is to Live Review

To Love Is to Live

Obsessive love inspires a torrent of conflicted emotions in these heartfelt poems.
Love, Makhadmi writes in "I Love Love," detonates "like the alpha phase of an atomic bomb," and the 99 poems she gathers here register the searing heat, abject surrender and toxic fallout that ensue. The latter two predominate in her first section, "Poems of Painful Love," addressed by a besotted woman--in "Raindrops" she wonders, "How can my life have meaning / When the sole purpose of my existence is to love you?"--to a nameless, and often heartless, man. "My stomach fills with pain you've left me in," she keens to her cruelly absent lover in "Drown" before continuing: "I drown in tears that have fallen from my lashes; / Like a seal, I can't keep up with killer whales." In "Day and Night," her unhinged anguish turns to self-victimization: "I cut my flesh to give relief to the constant agony in my heart." In "Pain," the tears and blood dry up under a hot anger: "To taste your pain excites me; / To hurt you is my mission. / Oh, how senseless I can be, / And send you to a mortician." Makhadmi's dark, repetitive, incantatory images of blood, tears and rainfall lift in the concluding section, "Poems of Sweet Love." Here the woman's devotion remains self-immolating--"I would sacrifice my happiness for you alone; / Like a wounded fox, I would lie on train tracks," she vows in "Sacrifice"--but in "No Boundaries" it yields a quiet joy--"Like the beauty of a flamingo, / My love for you is never ending"--and in "To Know You"--"My heart pitter patters with excitement...Because to know you is to love you"--a sunny lyricism. Makhadmi's unwavering focus on her narrator's inner feelings often turns the figure of the lover into a cipher, yet it works: her poetry vividly conveys a certain rapturous kind of love that blocks out everything but the heart's desire.
An intense, tragic, but ultimately hopeful accounting of the price--and value--of passion.

To Love is to Live is a collection of poems that deeply describes the feelings that love can bring. Love is a roller coaster ride that allows lovers feel moments of sheer joy-the feeling that the whole world has stopped, and their love is the only thing that exists. Hearts beat as one, and the rest of the world is distant, existing far from their emotional core. Yet love can also leave someone feeling that their whole life has been shattered; the world has suddenly become a dark, empty space seemingly overnight. The emotions of love cover the spectrum from total bliss to pure misery. These emotions cannot be denied; their strength over the hearts of lovers cannot be ignored. Some may yearn to feel the emotional high that love causes, but are scared to feel the hurt that sometimes comes along with it. Both the joy and the pain, though, are essential to being human. If you are not in love, you are not living.Love's CurseLove's curse is evil in itself; It preys on hearts of lovers at a time of weakness, Like a baby seal in the middle of the ocean. It seeks the souls of emptiness, And strikes at their most vulnerable, Like a hunter who follows its prey ...

Hard to believe this isn't memoir. Perhaps it is...
Jerry Sowles has written a book about salvation, growth toward human potential, and inspirational, all deriving from the love of a good woman with the unforgettable name of Forget Me Not. She is Jerrod's Korean wife, a woman who married him based on her believe that he's different from others, a man who can offer her options not available to her as a woman in her own country.
Truest Love is far better written than the majority of most self-published books and deserves to be read by a wider audience.
I wish Jerry Sowles all the best as he progresses toward his stated goal: "to write like John Irving."

The America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook: Featuring More Than 1,200 Kitchen-Tested Recipes

Let me say right off that I love Cook's Illustrated and its sister publication, Cook's Country. They are one of the prime reasons for my reputation as a fine cook and baker. When I heard that this book would soon be published, I got very excited. I have waited for years for them to publish a general-purpose cookbook. I will treasure this book, but it's not without its faults--faults that came from taking the cheap way out.
Unlike other books put out by Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen, this book contains many new recipes developed over years expessly for this book. It may seem a little dishonest to review a cookbook without trying many of its recipes, but I can say after many years of using their magazines and books that their recipes are the most foolproof out there. My only quibbles usually just come down to differences in taste. Their recipes work and they are usually a cut above the rest. This book has over 1,200 recipes and is loaded with photographs and tips. Like all their publications, you'll find the book fascinating and you'll learn a lot that will improve your cooking results. Unlike many of the recipes in their other publications, this book's focus is on everyday cooking from the basic stuff on up. Think of it as a better-researched Betty Crocker or Better Homes and Gardens, but with higher standards.
I really hate to see excellence compromised, and that's what Cook's and their publisher have done. The design, layout (except for the dividers), thought, contents, etc. are all excellent and you can tell that years of preparation and work went into this book. If it had just been printed on thicker, glossier paper this book would be an instant classic. As it is, the paper is so thin (not as thin as Bible paper, but in waving distance) that it can be hard to turn a page without messing it up. And since the paper doesn't have a glossy finish, the photographs didn't reproduce well enough to show all the detail they were designed to do. Now, they don't look as bad as the crummy reproduction you see in, say, Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, but this lousy choice of paper has definitely COMPROMISED the overall quality of this book--and it's a shame. Also, the many dividers--although of thicker stock--aren't sturdy enough to really use their tabs to open to a section. Plus, they are not in alphabetical order--something that Betty Crocker learned long ago is necessary to make a cookbook handy--and with as many extra divisions as Cook's has put in this book, it just makes it that much harder to find what you're looking for. I realize that the choice of paper was almost certainly made to keep down the cost and bulk of the book (it's approximately 850 pages), BUT they made the wrong choice. I sincerely hope that Cook's gets enough complaints that this book is soon reprinted properly.

I was very disappointed with this book. It took less than 1 hour to read cover to cover and appears self-published by the author without use of an editor or proof reader.
It also feels like the author has not read the latest research on the subject but just quotes from his 20-30 years experience with examples that seem outdated for a book published in 2008.
It does have some interesting examples and would serve as a very basic primer on the subject if you don't mind paying the price. It seems much too expensive for what it is- The quality would better suit a $4.99 downloadable ebook.

The Pulse Test: The Secret of Building Your Basic Health Review

The Pulse Test: The Secret of Building Your Basic Health
Average Reviews:

At a loss to figure out why I was so ill, my doctor recommended I use the information in this book to determine if food allergies might be the source of my health problems (daily migraine, violent coughing fits lasting 8+ hours, chronic fatique, severe depression, sinus problems, memory loss, confusion, disorientation... and the list went on and on...and on). The migraine had begun some 30 years earlier, and things had progressed from there with the list of symtpms growing yearly. I had not a clue as to their source, even though I searched constantly for answers. I had even done the routines with allergists, but got no answers.
I read the book; it made perfect sense. A high pulse rate indicates the body is in reaction to exposure to some "allergen." On day three or four of my test, I developed a very high pulse in the morning, but I had not eaten a single thing. However, I HAD cleaned the bathrooms, using my usual cleaning products which contained chemicals and chemical fragrance. It didn't take long to make the connection!! We had stumbled upon a shortcut to diagnosing my intolerance to chemicals. After 30+ years, I had an answer! This book, written in the 50's, focuses on food allergies, so did not have much to say about how chemicals affect living things, since chemicals were just becoming prevalent in our world beginning after WWII. However, the pulse test told the tale, and I was diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.
That was 4 years ago, and my life has changed dramatically, needless to say. Having this book probably saved me years of tests and evaluation -- except that I would not have lasted long enough to go that route.
Most doctors will scoff at what Dr. Coca has written here, but you don't need a doctor to simply check your pulse and discover what might be the source of your symptoms.

Average Reviews:

I believe this book should be mandatory reading for anyone operating a dynamometer or using dynamometer services. It provides a fundamental knowledge on what to expect from the dynamometer and how to get the most from your time spent using the dynamometer. The focus is on water brake engine dynamometers and chassis dynamometers using eddy current power absorption units. The book is not a scripted tuning session, specifying exactly what to do for each engine tuning anomally. It does provide a great foundation for where to begin and what to look for during a tuning session. In my job, I teach people how to use a dynamometer every week. I wish each dynamometer manufacturer would include this book with the purchase of their dyno, and then make it mandatory reading prior to my training session with the new customer.

The Ultimate IQ Test Book: 1,000 Practice Test Questions to Boost Your Brain Power
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking to exercise your brain, these tests will certainly stimulate and strengthen your noodle and result in improved brain function and longevity - the medical community is in consensus with this. But, if you're trying to see what your IQ is, these tests might not be the most representative. The tests in this book are actually HARDER than real IQ tests, or at least the one I was given.
Several years ago, a former employer sent me with a group of employees, all part of a management training program, to take a series of tests and evaluations. A professionally administered and proctored IQ test was given as part of the process. The main difference between the tests in this book and the REAL IQ test was that the ladder was multiple choice and the tests in this book have many questions that require a written answer that doesn't allow for guessing. This in fact makes the tests in this book more difficult than a standardized IQ test.
These tests are challenging, to say the least. But after you've done a few, you'll better understand the logic that goes into conceiving the questions and your scores will improve.
I'm contemplating applying for membership into MENSA and I am confident that doing these practice tests will significantly improve my entry score compared to if I went in cold.
But I feel the best use of these tests is for brain exercise. Unless you're in school or actively learning new, complex things, your brain gets into autopilot mode and starts atrophying. Consistent challenges like problem solving is one of the best ways to keep you mind sharp.

The Food Taster Review

The Food Taster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've an appetite for a richly imaginative, ribald and riotously funny tale, "The Food Taster" is your dish.
We learn in the foreword that while visiting a Tuscan village some five years ago translator Elbling befriended an old rogue who soon died. Found in the departed's possessions was a yellowed manuscript which was given to Elbling. Upon returning to the U.S. Elbling consulted rare book experts and learned to his amazement that the manuscript was authentic. Since he is a bit of an Italophile he decided to translate the manuscript himself, and publish it for our pleasure.
Are we to believe this yarn? Only if we're very gullible. Yet, Elbling presents his "find" with such persuasiveness and charm that readers tend to forget that it is a product of a fertile imagination with a camera's eye for period detail and unerring ear for authentic dialogue.
The "long hidden manuscript" is the biography of Ugo DiFonte, who is by turns audacious, foolhardy, pitiful, and laugh-out-loud funny.
A poor Italian peasant Ugo lived in 16th century Italy with his young daughter, Miranda. Just when life could not possibly take a turn for the worst the pair are torn from their hard scrabble farm by a portly, ignorant dictator, Duke Federico. Ugo soon learns that he is to be the Duke's food taster, a position now vacant since his predecessor's tongue was cut out as punishment for inefficiency.
In order to survive Ugo quickly learns the tools of his new trade: antidotes, poisons, and the taste of every herb, meat, sweet, and vegetable that will be served at the castle. Thus, a man who was quite recently starving is now forced to taste glorious food, but he cannot enjoy it.
On top of the dire machinations steaming from the castle's kitchen Ugo must also try to keep his willful and more-beautiful-each-day daughter in line. That in itself would be a 24/7 job as she is soon the object of lascivious stares and courted by young Tommaso, a kitchen helper who aspires to be a chef. However, when push comes to shove Ugo is able to drive all feelings of romance from Miranda's heaving young bosom with a potion of "the juice of an apple mixed with the powder of a dead frog."
Despite the plague sweeping throughout the country, an evil brother who would destroy him, and sundry threats to his person the widowed Ugo is able to find love from time to time. First, there is Agnese, a washerwoman from Bosnia, and then the fair Helene.
Will the beleaguered Ugo ever find happiness?
Such a life.......such a story.....such an entertainment!

Product Testing: The Chemistry of Ice Cream presents a very good, clear, concise overview of the chemistry and history of ice cream. Dianne Epp makes a rather technical, complicated subject quite clear. Even I, who have written many articles about ice cream learned a thing or two, helped by many illustrations, photos, diagrams and graphs, all delivered in just 55 pages. An excellent read!
However, I bought the book to learn more about ice cream testing to be used in my ice cream manufacturing business but found that the last 35 pages, devoted to testing were targeted toward the entry-level food science student and the tests were designed to be lab-class tests. So, if that is what you want this is a terrific book. But if you are in the ice cream business and want to learn how to test your products or need a more technical approach, this is not the book for you.

I bought the PDF version of this book. It provided an excellent introduction to Wicket. Wicket is based on a different paradigm (components and events rather than request/response and actions) to most Java web frameworks so the learning curve can be quite steep. This book covered everything I needed to know to really get going with Wicket in a straightforward and easy to understand manner.
I would recommend this book for anyone looking to learn about Wicket.

If you'd like to create AJAX web-based applications easily, then this book is for you. More importantly, it shows you how to do that with joy and feel good about your own work! You don't need to know servlet or JSP while your productivity will be much higher than using servlet or JSP directly. This is possible because we're going to use a library called Wicket that makes complicated stuff simple and elegant. How does it do that? First, it allows the web designer to work on the static contents and design of a page while allowing the developer to work on the dynamic contents of that page without stepping on each other's toes; Second, it allows developers to work with high level concepts such as objects and properties instead of HTTP URLs, query parameters or HTML string values; Third, it comes with powerful components such as calendar, tree and data grid and it allows you to create your own components for reuse in your own project. However, don't take our word for it! This book will quickly walk you through real world use cases to show you how to use Wicket and leave it up to you to judge. Sample chapters are available on the book website at www.agileskills2.org.

Great stuff. Fournier's book fills a few big gaps in anyone's testing library. As a PM for software projects using a wide range of development approaches, I applaud his goal of coming up with an `agile' approach to testing that works wherever. And his emphasis on non technical skills (e.g. communication with analysts, maybe stakeholders) will help new testers make sense of their role. He has a no-nonsense writing style with lots of personal experience thrown in, plus tons of examples... These were a real help for me.

It introduces a realistic view of software testing that includes the concepts and methods needed to get the software testing job done in an efficient manner. It is based on practical Use Case driven testing techniques that work on any software development project, even those where Use Cases aren't front and center.Skipping the ceremony testing concepts are presented and tied together in a sequential and straightforward fashion, while injecting real world, less than perfect examples in the form of 'war stories'. Testing methods and techniques are described in a common sense manner that is easy to understand This is a book for testers looking for hands on tools and help - and for software managers and developers looking for a different approach to software testing, one that focuses on being agile no matter what type of project.

Melanie Mitchell's analogy-making as perception is a remarkably original book. It documents an artificial intelligence project known as copycat, which was implemented as the author's PhD project under Douglas Hofstadter.
Copycat is unlike anything in artificial intelligence. It is not a symbolic system, neither a connectionist one. The major goal of the project is to study the nature of concepts. Concepts, as we all know, are flexible, context-sensitive creatures. For instance, DNA has nothing to do with a computer program, but there is a sense on which we can see DNA as a computer program that guides embrionary development. DNA can also be seen as a zipper, as it "zips down" in two parts (for cell reproduction). Still another view would be DNA as a will, for it carries valuable hereditary "property". Now, DNA is in truth just a molecule, and nothing else. The question is, how can we see the same thing (such as DNA) as so many different things? Moreover, how can these fluid context-sensitive concepts be implemented in rigid, rule-obeying computers?
To which the answer is: what we view is the abstract roles that DNA plays in embrionary development, cell division, and in individual reproduction. And this is the very idea of "Analogy-making as perception".
Well, not so fast. The copycat project is not designed to grasp such extremely complex subjects as DNA, but, on the other hand, it presents a computational architecture that suggests what the nature of concepts is like, and how flexible concepts may emerge from inflexible mechanisms.
Copycat can solve analogy problems such as abc->abd:ijk-> ?. But it is not restricted to trivial ones. Consider the following analogy: abc ->abd:xyz->?. How would you solve it? How do you think that copycat solves it?
Obviously, this project doesn't fit in very easily in classical artificial intelligence, as it attacks some of the most pervasive ideas of the field, such as the separation of perception and cognition. In fact, I think this book redefines the major questions of artificial intelligence (and although Mitchell does not state it, I think the copycat model does not fall prey to either the frame problem or to the symbol grounding problem).
It is very unfortunate that this is not one of the best-selling books in AI. But I believe that it will ultimately make its mark on the History of the field, if for no other reason than it simply is the right approach to genuine intelligence and authentic understanding.
Should one day Amazon.com let me give a 6-star to a book, but charge me a dollar for giving it, this is one that would definitely deserve to be such a 6-star.

PS. I would also recommend Hofstadter's Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies; and Robert French's Subtlety of Sameness.

The psychologist William James observed that "a native talent for perceiving analogies is ... the leading fact in genius of every order." The centrality and the ubiquity of analogy in creative thought have been noted again and again by scientists, artists, and writers, and understanding and modeling analogical thought have emerged as two of the most important challenges for cognitive science.Analogy-Making as Perception is based on the premise that analogy-making is fundamentally a high-level perceptual process in which the interaction of perception and concepts gives rise to "conceptual slippages" which allow analogies to be made. It describes Copycat - a computer model of analogymaking, developed by the author with Douglas Hofstadter, that models the complex, subconscious interaction between perception and concepts that underlies the creation of analogies. In Copycat, both concepts and high-level perception are emergent phenomena, arising from large numbers of low-level, parallel, non-deterministic activities. In the spectrum of cognitive modeling approaches, Copycat occupies a unique intermediate position between symbolic systems and connectionist systems a position that is at present the most useful one for understanding the fluidity of concepts and high-level perception. On one level the work described here is about analogy-making, but on another level it is about cognition in general. It explores such issues as the nature of concepts and perception and the emergence of highly flexible concepts from a lower-level "subcognitive" substrate.Melanie Mitchell, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, is a Fellow of the Michigan Society of Fellows. She is also Director of the Adaptive Computation Program at the Santa Fe Institute.
