Barb McNinch is not only an excellent professional trainer, she is also an outstanding Rottie person. In this book, McNinch goes far beyond a basic, generic training book and presents the reader with a training program tailormade to the Rottweiler. Readers of this book will come away with a much deeper understanding and appreciation for their Rottweilers, as well as the ability to train their puppies and dogs to truly be good canine citizens. I would highly recommend this book to Rottie owners, as well as owners of Rottie mixes. If the Rottie-mix has taken on any characteristics of the Rottweiler, this book will be of great help.

Excellent writers are like great chefs; you don't really need to know what they're writing/cooking to know you're in for a treat. In this case, we've got David Sirota riffing (and reporting) on how a bunch of "disconnected and atomized" rage is "frothing" in America.
Whether it's anti-illegal-immigrant vigilantes, frustrated high-tech workers, "blue chip revolutionaries," "Uprising Television" (or radio or blogs), netroots activists, the anti-tax movement or the anti-anti-tax movement, there certainly appear to be a lot of pissed off people out there in America today. Just look at polls that show 80%+ of people who feel the country's headed in the wrong direction. Look at the huge turnout in this year's presidential primaries -- particularly on the Democratic side -- and the upsurge in political energy being shown by people around the country. Look at the anger at the President, at the Congress, at many of our institutions.
The question is, does all this add up to a "populist uprising?" Even David Sirota is skeptical, but he certainly sees the potential for such an uprising, and apparently so does a nervous corporate American and insider political establishment. In the end, I'm not sure that Sirota has completely proved his thesis, that "the disparate pieces of this uprising are all part of one enraged backlash." However, after reading his well-written, well-researched, informative, and entertaining book, I'm far less likely to write off that thesis as a definite possibility in coming years.

Wicket in Action Review

This is a great book that really gives a in-depth overview of Wicket. I've been working with Wicket for a couple of years and had to suffer through figuring things out from examples and mailing lists. This book is the definitive guide. I've already learned several new things from it. Many thanks to the authors who went to great lengths to get this book out!

There are dozens of Java frameworks out there, but most of them require you to learn special coding techniques and new, often rigid, patterns of development. Wicket is different. As a component-based Web application framework, Wicket lets you build maintainable enterprise-grade web applications using the power of plain old Java objects (POJOs), HTML, Ajax, Spring, Hibernate and Maven. Wicket automatically manages state at the component level, which means no more awkward HTTPSession objects. Its elegant programming model enables you to write rich web applications quickly.

Wicket in Action is an authoritative, comprehensive guide for Java developers building Wicket-based Web applications. This book starts with an introduction to Wicket's structure and components, and moves quickly into examples of Wicket at work. Written by two of the project's earliest and most authoritative experts, this book shows you both the "how-to" and the "why" of Wicket. As you move through the book, you'll learn to use and customize Wicket components, how to interact with other technologies like Spring and Hibernate, and how to build rich, Ajax-driven features into your applications.

How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services. Book & CD Review

How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services. Book and CD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently finished reading How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services by Mike Andrews and James A. Whittaker. I, like many of you, develop web software for a living. I've always taken security seriously and occasionally sneered when I ran across examples of common mistakes. Having said that, this book was an eye opener for me.
The book covers common exploits such as bypassing input validation, SQL injection, and denial of service. There were also several types of attacks I hadn't really considered before. I won't list them here because someone would undoubtedly say, "I can't believe he didn't know about that one!" The authors cover 24 different types of attacks in all. The book also includes coverage of web privacy issues and security related to web services.
Finally, as icing on the cake, a CD is included that contains many tools that will find permanent spots in your arsenal. There are tools to do things like scan web servers for common exploits, mirror sites for local analysis, and check SSL cipher strengths. My favorites are the local proxies that will allow you to view and modify posts as they travel from the client and the server. I always knew I could do this, but didn't know how easy it is. The CD also contains the source code of an example site that includes many flaws for you to practice.
This book is written for software professionals to help them put the hackers out of business. So, it necessarily includes hacker techniques. If you develop or test web software, you should read this book before the hackers do. :-)

Since its early days as an information exchange tool limited to academe, researchers, and the military, the web has grown into a commerce engine that is now omnipresent in all facets of our lifes. More websites are created daily and more applications are developed to allow users to learn, research, and purchase online. As a result, web development is often rushed, which increases the risk of attacks from hackers. Furthermore, the need for secure applications has to be balanced with the need for usability, performance, and reliability. In this book, Whittaker and Andrews demonstrate how rigorous web testing can help prevent and prepare for such attacks. They point out that methodical testing must include identifying threats and attack vectors to establish and then implement the appropriate testing techniques, manual or automated.

Software Testing: Interview Questions (Computer Science)

I was expecting much more from a book like this. I question whether the authors have ever been through a SWTE or SQA interview at all. It seems as though the questions were reverse-engineered from a wealth of random Internet material. The book is full of useless and unnecessary diagrams and the majority of the answers have very little depth. You would get the same value from an hour or two of Google searches.

The competence and quality of software testers are often judged by the various testing techniques they have mastered. As the name suggests, the book provides a self-study format and is designed for certification course review, and for freshers as well as professionals who are searching for opportunities in the software testing field. Along with software testing basics, the book covers software testing techniques and interview questions (e.g., Six Sigma and CMMI) which are important from the Software Quality Assurance (SQA) perspective. It also has in-depth coverage of software expense estimation topics like function points (FPA) and TPA analysis. A CD-ROM supplements the content with the TestCompleteTM software-testing tool setup, software estimation templates (PDFs), an interview rating sheet, a sample resume, third-party contributions, and more.

---> To swing for the fence, entrepreneurs must avoid the shark-infested red water and sail into the deep blue sea.
If you're even thinking of creating a software startup, I highly recommend you read The Business of Software as soon as possible. Doing so will save you much pain and suffering from senseless mistakes. When there is such a large body of existing knowledge, there is no cause for trial and error mentality. There's plenty of other opportunities for trailblazing. Read this book as a bare minimum before starting your venture.
Cusumano, offers an in depth study of what it takes to succeed in software. Of particular value are critical questions to contemplate:
1) Do you want to be mainly a Products company, or a Services company?
2) Do you want to sell to Individuals, or Enterprises | Mass market, or Niche market?
3) How horizontal (broad) or vertical (specialized)is your product or service?
4) Can you generate a recurring revenue stream that will endure both good and bad times?
5) Will you target mainstream customers, or do you have a plan to avoid the chasm?
6) Do you plan on being a Leader, Follower, or Complementor?
7) What kind of character do you want your company to have?
Cusumano also offers eight Critical Success Factors that are necessary for Software Start-ups to succeed as a business and raise investor money:
1) Strong Management Team
2) An Attractive Market
3) A Compelling New Product, Service, or Hybrid Solution
4) Strong evidence of Customer Interest
5) A Plan to Overcome the "Credibility Gap"
6) A Business Model Showing Early Growth and Profit Potential
7) Flexibility in Strategy and Product Offerings
8) The Potential for Large Payoff to Investors
Don't reinvent the wheel. Read this book as soon as possible, preferably "before" you create that software venture you so boldly dreamed.

The world's leading expert on the global software industry and coauthor of the bestseller Microsoft Secrets reveals the inner workings of software giants like IBM, Microsoft, and Netscape and shows what it takes to create, develop, and manage a successful company -- in good times and bad -- in the most fiercely competitive business in the world. In the $600 billion software industry it is the business, not the technology, that determines success or failure. This fact -- one that thousands of once glamorous start-ups have unhappily discovered for themselves -- is the well-documented conclusion of this enormously readable and revealing new book by Michael Cusumano, based on nearly twenty years of research and consulting with software producers around the world. Cusumano builds on dozens of personal experiences and case studies to show how issues of strategy and organization are irrevocably linked with those of managing the technology and demonstrates that a thorough understanding of these issues is vital to success. At the heart of the book Cusumano poses seven questions that underpin a three-pronged management framework. He argues that companies must adopt one of three basic business models: become a products company at one end of the strategic spectrum, a services company at the other end, or a hybrid solutions company in between. The author describes the characteristics of the different models, evaluates their strengths and weaknesses, and shows how each is more or less appropriate for different stages in the evolution of a business as well as in good versus bad economic times. Readers will also find invaluable Cusumano's treatment of software development issues ranging from architecture and teams to project management and testing, as well as two chapters devoted to what it takes to create a successful software start-up. Highlights include eight fundamental guidelines for evaluating potential software winners and Cusumano's probing analysis, based on firsthand knowledge, of ten start-ups that have met with varying degrees of success. The Business of Software is timely essential reading for managers, programmers, entrepreneurs, and others who follow the global software industry.

NAET: Say Good-Bye to Your Allergies Review

NAET: Say Good-Bye to Your Allergies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is an Answer for your Allergies!
When I opened my mail, this book "Say Good-bye to Your Allergies," was waiting for me. My friend sent this to me with a note. "This may be the answer to your problem".
Two weeks ago I had lunch with her at a Sea-food restaurant. Of course, I ordered fish and chips. I must have taken a couple of bites, I began itching all over. In a few minutes my lips swelled, eyelids became puffy. I took an antihistamine. It took about 30 minutes or so before I felt some relief. I couldn't afford to go to the emergency room, because by 5:00 p.m. I had to complete certain papers and show to my supervisor for his approval before the scheduled office meeting at 6:00 p.m. I felt very tired and sleepy. I had to interrupt the lunch and go home for an hour to sleep off the reaction from the fish as well as the antihistamine.
The cover had an eye-catching but pleasing color! The title looked very impressive. I thought to myself, "I wish this was true." I didn't believe a bit that an allergy was curable.
All my life I had suffered from various allergies. As a child I had taken allergy shots for years. Three years ago my doctor gave me this new allergy pill and it gave me some relief. So I stopped the allergy shots. I carried the pill with me always as a heart patient would carry nitroglycerine. I was very limited with what I ate. My doctor cautioned me about eating many foods which were very high on a traditional allergy testing. I avoided them very faithfully most of the time. Once in a while I cheated; then of course, I paid the price on those days.
So you can imagine my excitement about this book title. I immediately sat down to read it.
The organization of the book is excellent. The book is written in an easy to understand casual manner for a layman.
Foreword and preface were impressive. The author's struggle with her allergies and the experience about her difficult journey until she discovered this revolutionary treatment is shared in the preface. Her story could very well be mine before I received this new allergy pill three years ago. I knew this is not the way to live, depending on a drug to pull you out of a disaster, living in fear everyday of your life not knowing what is going to get you next. But this was better than nothing.
Introduction gives an overview about the book and this new treatment. I had never heard of NAET before. From reading the book I learned that she had discovered this in 1983 and practicing it ever since. She has also taught this treatment to 7000 medical practitioners but my doctor had never heard about this either. Otherwise he should have mentioned it to me. She has referred to her website to locate the nearest practitioner. Website:www.naet.com.
I immediately looked up for a practitioner near me and sure enough there was one within a mile from my work.
Chapter 1 gave definition of allergies, the author's views on allergies, possible causes, commonly encountered allergens, a list of usual allergic symptoms, a list of hidden symptoms, and a self-evaluation allergy check list. I scored very high on the evaluation. It felt as if she has chosen all my symptoms to create the list.
Chapter 2 introduced the NAET concept, a little explanation on how it was developed, also a glimpse into her unpublished research data and a few retrospective case evaluation reports on the effectiveness on commonly seen health disorders. Any lay person can understand the colorful illustration of the graphs.
Chapter 3 describes the categories of allergens, and how the allergens affect certain areas of the body, how the allergens affect different people differently. According to the author there is nothing like idiopathic or unknown cause for any health problem as we hear always in the allopathic medicine. She says, when the doctor does not know how to look for the cause of a particular problem, he/she cannot find the cause. Then the diagnosis will be " idiopathic" or due to an "unknown cause." The final stage of this diagnosis will be "Incurable." How true it is!
Chapter 4 gives you ways of detecting your own allergies and also gives some information on some relevant standard diagnostic tests.
Chapter 5 describes acupuncture energy meridians, nerve energy blockages and how the nerve energy blockages manifest into allergic symptoms and other allergy related health disorders.
Chapter 6 teaches the reader to self-test and detect allergies in various ways. This allergy testing can be used in testing young children to people at any age. This can be also used in testing animals.
Chapter 7 shows you how to live with your allergies, what can you do about it, and also gives some insight about the NAET allergens in the protocol.
Chapter 8 gives the self-help instructions with illustrations to overcome an acute allergic reaction. It also gives the reader valuable information to prevent medical emergencies and/or teach you to self-treat an acute reaction if in fact an emergency happened.
But the author discourages and cautions the reader from self-treating the allergens until the patient is treated for all the basic allergens with a well trained NAET practitioner because of the possibilities of severe anaphylactic reactions and side effects from not applying the treatments correctly. I totally agree with that and appreciate this WARNING.
Chapter 9 has many endorsements from successful, practicing NAET professionals from all over the world.
Chapter 10 has some truly amazing testimonials from NAET patients.
Overall, the book is very impressive. I read this 215 page book in two hours.
By the way I made an appointment the very next day after I read the book. I have completed 18 treatments so far. I don't have to take the allergy pills anymore. I can eat many foods once I dreaded even to touch including fish and shellfish. NAET works. I am very happy that I went to lunch with Margaret and reacted to fish in front of her. Otherwise I would never have discovered NAET.

Building Valve Amplifiers Review

Building Valve Amplifiers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased this, the companion work to the author's definitive book on tube amp design, Valve Amplifiers. There are quite a few books on how to design a tube amp, but very few resources available on how to safely construct them. I say safely because vacuum tube amplifiers use voltages that are lethal, some extreme designs using voltages in excess of a kilovolt! Safety is essential when dealing with tube amps at all times.
Originally, the author covered amplifier construction techniques in the first edition of Valve Amplifiers, but that volume is now in it's third edition and is over six hundred pages long WITHOUT the construction section. It's understandable that Mr. Jones decided to put out a separate tome on amp construction, since the construction information is as long as the entire first edition of Valve Amplifiers.
This book goes into great detail on how to build a chassis, wiring techniques, PCB's, metalwork and assembly using only hand tools. Examples are given of tools to be used (often with more than one choice for a given job) and how to use them properly. The book then goes on to explain the use of oscilloscopes, distortion measurements and troubleshooting, completely illustrated with pictures and drawings needed to do these things. There are also useful tricks, such as using a discarded radio tuning capacitor to find the optimum capacitance for feedback compensation.
This, along with Valve Amplifiers, are the definitive modern works for the amateur on how to design and build tube amplifiers. If you're interested in tube DIY audio, there just aren't any substitutes for these books, they're simply the best currently available, period.

Testing Applications on the Web: Test Planning for Mobile and Internet-Based Systems, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is more than a minor update of the first edition of this highly regarded book - it's a major rewrite with added material on mobile web testing.
As in the earlier book, this one clearly shows the differences between traditional testing and web testing, which will provide QA professionals who are moving from older environments into web-based systems an orientation and direction. For new QA professionals the chapters on software testing basics, networking and web application components provide a solid foundation. The chapter on mobile web application platforms is unique to this book, and adds true value. Other core material includes test planning, and a sample application and test plan to add realistic scenarios to the material.
Web-specific test advice encompasses UI, functional, server-side, database, help, installation, compatibility, security and performance testing. These cover all facets of the test process and associated procedures in a web-centric environment. Additional chapters include using test scripts, testing mobile web applications, and web testing tools.
While the core content is on the mark and accurate, the appendices are as invaluable. These include a test plan template, weekly status report template, error analysis checklist (with error examples), UI test-case design guidelines (common keyboard navigation/shortcut matrix and mouse action matrix web), test-case design guideline: input boundary and validation matrix, display compatibility test matrix, and browser/OS configuration matrix.
If you test web systems this is the most complete book you can read, and it is destined to attain the same 'classic' status as the first edition.

When I lived in Boston, some years ago when there was a Rosie's bakery in Harvard Square that was forever crowded, I used to pop in there to ogle at all the absolutely mouth-watering treats. Mind you, I couldn't eat a thing, being intolerant to wheat, but my goodness was the "window-shopping" a treat.
With the publication of this cookbook, now folks can truly enjoy their own heaven on earth in their own home. Thank you, Rosie! or I should really say Judy! Besides of being easy to follow, full of helpfup tips and interesting anctedotes, these recipes are to die for. I've tried quite a few, and every single one is hands down without fail the most delicious, delectable, divine desserts I have ever made. You cannot go wrong with this cookbook if you are looking for delicious treats to bake. Besides of cookies and bars, she has recipes for cakes and pies, scrumptuous frostings.
(By now, you may be wondering how I can be eating and enjoying these various treats... I substitute the wheat flour called for in the recipes with a rice flour mix + guar gum, which makes me even more appreciative that Judy has written this cookbook. Finally, I can have a taste of her goodies.)
