Testing UMTS: Assuring Conformance and Quality of UMTS User Equipment Review

Testing UMTS: Assuring Conformance and Quality of UMTS User Equipment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don't be put off by the word "Testing" in the title - there is an emphasis on RF and protocol test aspects of the UE, but this book would still be very useful to someone who is involved with general UE development/support/testing rather than just those digging into the depths of PTCRB testing, for example.
Highlights:
- General UMTS architecture overview
- Physical layer
- Layer 2
- Layer 3
- Protocol testing
- HSDPA
- Future directions
- Guide to useful 3GPP technical specs, reasonably helpful index (as opposed to some early Wiley UMTS books)
The real highlight for me is the standard of technical writing: lucid, brief but not too terse, and - where I can tell - correct. I use this as my main UMTS technical reference for UE and air interface descriptions and supplement with other books for CN. As a bridge to the standards it works very well and is well worth the investment.

A modern mobile phone is a highly complex electronic system made up from a variety of diverse sub-systems, all of which must work seamlessly together. Today's users have very high expectations which set tough demands on manufacturers as they introduce third generation technology. While quality, in terms of the phone's stability, performance and behaviour on the network, originate from good design, the only way to be sure of quality is by testing it. This makes testing a very important part of any mobile phone's life cycle, from development through to manufacture and beyond, touching a number of different disciplines and departments.
Testing UMTS is divided in three sections. Section One provides an overview of major types of testing and the organisations and tasks involved. In particular it looks at what is involved in conformance testing and device certification. Section Two is more technical and looks at the UMTS standard itself, working through the protocol layers. Future trends and their impact on testing mobile devices are examined in Section Three, including the emergence of new technologies both in the access network and the core network and the evolution of new testing methodologies.
Examines UMTS and the testing of UMTS devices which are huge areas in the testing process
Provides essential information on processes and techniques for mobile phone testing
Operation of the UMTS standard is described from a test point of view
Focuses on most important areas of the 3rd-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard from a test perspective
Offers advice on products, services and resources that aid the testing process.

This book is an ideal text for engineers and managers who are either directly involved in the process of testing UMTS mobiles, or who are looking for an understanding of what is involved in testing. Professionals involved in the development of UMTS mobiles, integration and verification, conformance testing, operator acceptance testing, manufacturing and servicing will find this book indispensable.

The Black and Decker Complete Guide to Home Wiring: Including Information on Home Electronics and Wireless Technology, Revised Edition

I was getting ready to add a couple rooms to my house and wanted to do the electrical myself. I'm an electrical engineer and have done plenty of wiring throughout the years, but none of it that necessarily complied with the NEC. Oh sure I used 14 awg for 15 amp circuits and 12 awg for 20 amp circuits, but that was about the extent of the code compliance (out of ignorance of the code, not contempt). Well, I wanted to start following the letter of the law so I got the B&D "Complete Guide to Home Wiring".
Did this book meet my needs? No. Is it a bad book? No. The book just doesn't go into enough detail (and has errors) to give you all the information you'll need to wire a house. On the other hand, if all you're looking to do is replace some existing wiring or add on to a existing branch circuit, this may the book for you. If you're really wanting to understand the NEC (in a very straight forward manner), I would recommend getting "Electrical Wiring Residential" by Ray C. Mullin along with the NEC Pocket Guide to Residential Electrical Installations. Those two books alone will provide 99% of what you need to know for your remodel.
P.S. When I wrote to the editors of the B&D book to point out the errors that it contains (direct contradictions from one page to another), I got no response back from them. I guess they sell enough of them not to care.

Earlier editions of The Complete Guide to Home Wiring sold more than 500,000 copies, and this expanded new book includes all the tried-and-true projects from earlier editions, updated to feature the latest fixtures. The book now meets the requirements of the 2005 National Electrical Code, including important changes for bathroom, kitchen and utility area wiring. No book is more complete when it comes to traditional wiring, but this is only the beginning. One of the biggest challenges facing homeowners today is hooking up the many electronic components they own-computers and printers, home theaters and surround-sound systems, CD and DVD and DVR units, to name a few. Getting electronics to operate together correctly has its own dedicated chapter on how to solve this common source of frustration. You'll learn everything you need to know about home media connections, including how to create a high-definition home theater with surround-sound. And the newest wave in home wiring is to lose the wires altogether. Technologies with names such as "Bluetooth" and "wi-fi" are creating homes with fewer and fewer wires and greater and greater freedom of movement and communication. The final chapter in this book covers this exciting technology, and will show you how to integrate computers, printers, telephones, audio and video equipment, and more-all with no wires attached.

Game Design Foundations, Second Edition Review

Game Design Foundations, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

The title of this book is "Game Design". You might think, therefore, that most of it would be devoted to the design aspect of making games. This is not the case.
Most of the book is a shallow survey of the different aspects of game development. Programming, art, audio, production, testing, and the various tools used by each department. Everything except design, it seems.
Pederson writes the book as if you have just been appointed the job of creative director on a videogame development team. If that's the case, it's silly for him to be giving this survey of information that you probably already know.
The first few chapters are actually about game design, but the ideas here mostly fall into two categories: stuff that a game design lead would already know, and stuff that is wrong. His formula for making games consists of reading the reviews for previous games in the same genre, keeping the good parts, and fixing the flaws. This is not a recipe for making a hit game. This is not how Tetris, Diablo, Zelda, or The Sims were made.
How about some advice for level or mission designers? How about some advice for anyone other than the ultimate authority of a game development team who wants to make their game better but doesn't know how?
The one thing I liked about this book was Pederson's point about how game ideas are a dime a dozen. It is so true; I've been working on games for ten years, and it always seems like I'm drowning in other people's ideas. I am glad I'm not the only one who feels this way, and I don't regret reading the book, if it was just for his persuasive arguments on this one point.

Game Design Foundations, Second Edition covers how to design the game from the important opening sentence, the One Pager document, the Executive Summary and Game Proposal, the Character Document to the Game Design Document. The book describes game genres, where game ideas come from, game research, innovation in gaming, important gaming principles such as game mechanics, game balancing, AI, path finding and game tiers. The basics of programming, level designing, and film scriptwriting are explained by example. The designers understanding of the entire development team and the outlets for even the smallest development team to create fun content is highlighted. Each chapter has exercises to hone in on the newly learned designer skills that will display your work as a game designer and knowledge in the game industry.

Electron Beam Testing Technology (Microdevices) Review

Electron Beam Testing Technology (Microdevices)

This book is a very useful explanation of electron beam metrology fundamentals and techniques. It is very useful as a first introduction to the basics of e-beam technology from an SEM/metrology perspective. Topics such as e-beam optics, detectors, secondary electron emission, voltage contrast etc. are presented very coherently. The focus is on the main conclusion and not on the mathematics leading to the result. In that sense, it is a must read for a beginner to e-beam metrology.

Testing Web Security: Assessing the Security of Web Sites and Applications
Average Reviews:

This book proposes to teach us about testing web application security. OK, there *is* one entire sentence devoted to PHP, and somewhere in this mess I think that I remember seeing several lines regarding jsp. On the plus side -- there is an Appendix devoted to a cursory review of the SANS top 20 security vulnerabilities. Thank goodness -- googling for this list or finding it online at the SANS portal must be outside the abilities of the reviewers who gave this book positive reviews.
Testing w/ client-side proxies, as far as I can tell, is not covered; nor is any mention made of SQL insertion techniques, basic authentication mechanism testing, Nikto usage, etc.
I purchased this book based upon the initial reviews on this site. Obviously, the earlier reviewers were not reading the same book as the one I received.

Wiring 1-2-3 (Home Depot ... 1-2-3) Review

Wiring 1-2-3 (Home Depot ... 1-2-3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
...I found three books that seemed to have the information I needed: Wiring 1-2-3 by the people at Home Depot, The Complete Guide to Home Wiring by the Black and Decker people, and Wiring a House by Rex Cauldwell. Each is an excellent book with much to offer, but I definitely found that each had a slant that made it specialized in some way.
Of the three books, only the Cauldwell book was written in a person-to-person format. The author is a third generation electrician with years of experience, and as he says quite charmingly, "I have written this book from lifelong experience and knowledge--some of which has been passed down through each generation. However, there is no one within my family to pass the gauntlet to--no fourth generation to pick up the trade. Therefore, by reading this book you will become heir to my knowledge and experience. You, in effect, will become the fourth generation (p. 1)." His style is very much master of the craft to learning apprentice, explaining all facets of his field from how electricity is produced, how it is measured, what types of wires carry it to and into your home, and what tools one needs to do electrical work. He not only provides the information, he tells the reader the "whys" of what is, which I find helpful because it permits one to problem solve and trouble shoot more effectively. Particularly useful are those things that he tells the reader to avoid and what can happen when they aren't! The drawings are very helpful, particularly as they are clearer than photographs can be. Sometimes less is more in this regard. The schematic of the main floor of a house (pp. 22-23) which detailed how wiring is arranged for each room was quite helpful for my project, since it described what I should (and did) find in the walls when locating my power source and routing new wiring. I also found that the information on materials to select was helpful. I was able to go to the store and pick out just what I needed without any trouble at all.
While the Cauldwell book is a good one to read from cover to cover because of it's clear and thorough discussion of electrical wiring and its many helpful hints (which I did), it really did not help with my specific plans. It does cover some types of project, but I found that The Black and Decker book was more useful for my specific wiring goals. It's definitely a "how to do it" book with information on trouble shooting current wiring for potential problems (pp. 122-143), on code requirements (pp. 145-146), on how to calculate electrical loads and when to upgrade. It also includes simple repairs for the home owner, everything from checking which fuse controls which part of the house, to replacing plugs and repairing fluorescent lights. It also provides some advanced projects, like rewiring a kitchen or installing outdoor wiring. Of particular interest to my husband, the computer guru in our household, was the information on the home network wiring systems.
For my own project, I found the circuit maps for 26 common wiring layouts of greatest help. With the aid of this feature and the Cauldwell book, I was able to draw on paper the likely arrangement of the present wiring in my spare bedroom, and plan in the pathway to and from the projected new outlets. The diagrams on pages 155-167 also gave me a clearer idea of which wires connected to which specific sites on the receptacles, and what the pathway of the current would be. I was thrilled when I turned on the wall switch in the room, and the lighted crown molding actually came on, first try!
Wiring 1-2-3 is another group-effort type book like the Black and Decker. It'd made a splendid gift for the new home owner or prospective buyer. It provides the most extensive information on inspecting the home for electrical problems and providing measures for repairing them. The table of contents highlights almost every conceivable project, and each project has a list of materials, a skill scale that projects the level of difficulty to expect, and the amount of time that would be required by the experienced, the handy and the novice. It also makes some suggestions regarding the selection of a professional electrician for difficult projects, and does not urge the novice to go beyond their comfort level.
Although I didn't use the Home Depot book for actual planning and wiring, I found it was especially helpful with the messy stuff, things like drilling holes through the attic to route wires, the nitty-gritty of fishing for wires, and repairing the damage to walls where holes had to be made to route wires. In general these books are useful all round books.
I'd give all three books a 5, each for its own area of usefulness. If you're a person who likes to have a multi-perspective approach to your projects, then I'd recommend all three. Certainly the Home Depot book would be a very nice house warming gift.

Wiring a House Review

Wiring a House
Average Reviews:

I am a homeowner who has done dozens of minor and major electrical projects over the last 20 years.
This book is full of practical tips and details I have not seen in the basic books. I wish I had read it years ago.
Not the best starter book, it's for those who want to go beyond the starter books.
Cauldwell has and conveys a deep understanding of the electrician's work. His many insights and "Above Code" sidebars help you do a better job than your $90-an-hour electrician would do.
Heavy emphasis on mechanical tips...fishing, drilling, etc. which is usually the most challenging part.
Excellent photos and illustrations.
I don't give it 5 stars because there's too much missing. How many conductors are permitted in size X conduit? What gauge wire do I need for 50 amp service? What if it's a long 100+ ft. run? Can the ground wire be a smaller gauge? The book desparately needs reference tables for this kind of stuff.
There are no tips for pulling wire through conduit, bending PVC conduit, or outdoor wiring in general.
Too bad, because in many respects this a masterpiece.

When I first saw that this book was coming to light I had mixed feelings. On one hand, I was hunger for more testing knowledge, both theoretical and practical. On the other hand, I am always apprehensive when books talk about tools. However, the book impressed me as a comprehensive guide to Online Testing. And when I read the following (p.18), I was sure the book is what the market needs:
"The important thing to keep in mind is that the Google Website Optimizer is a tool. (...)It cannot do your thinking for you. It cannot plan your tests. It cannot produce the creative. It cannot interpret your results beyond demonstrating numerical significance and confidence. These things are up to you. If you want the tests you run on the Google Website Optimizer to be meaningful and to provide the intelligence you need to make well informed marketing decisions, then this is the book you need."
The authors cover very thoroughly the Why, the What, and the How of Online Testing. All you need to know from the value of testing to how should you get started. The examples are very enriching and illustrate the power of testing and the bottom line: Testing = $$.
Part I covers the Why; the authors delve on the power of testing and provide some amazing examples of it (including a masterpiece on Amazon's testing efforts). In addition they walk us through the Google Website Optimizer and provide powerful tips on the tool.
Part II covers the What and the How; the chapters are structured in a very actionable way: "Questions to ask", "Exercises", "What to test", and "Apply this to your site". As you read you can implement the tips instantly. A few examples of what to test are: usability, look & feel, searchability, product presentation, up-sell/cross-sell......
Part III covers some technical aspects of testing. The authors provide interesting information about Google website Optimizer scripts, statistical tests, and other special issues.
*The book is well structured, insightful and action oriented: exactly as online marketing should be! I warmly recommend it.*

Poorly organized, redundant, too many errors to list, Graf and Sheets claim to be knowledgeable but this is not apparent under close examination - best listed as a "find the errors" puzzle book. A great many useful circuits are presented here, but should not by any means be considered the last word for any design. Overpriced for the amount of headaches this can bring. Once you've spotted hundreds of blatent errors, and dozens of subtle, critical errors, one hesitates to trust anything in this book. The same can be said for the other volumes of this series. My personal opinion only; perhaps I'm either brain-damaged or more aware than the average reviewer or reader..

Fundamental Concepts for the Software Quality Engineer, Volume 2 Review

Fundamental Concepts for the Software Quality Engineer, Volume 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before describing this book, I want to clarify what this book is and is not.
It is: background material for candidates pursuing ASQ's Certified Software Quality Engineer, practicing CSQEs, and members of the software quality profession who may or may not be interested in becoming a CSQE.
It is NOT: the principle resource for studying for the CSQE exam, which is based upon the ASQ Software Quality Engineer Body of Knowledge.

What this book contains: twenty articles that comprise this compendium are aligned to the eight Software Quality Engineering Body of Knowledge topic areas:
(1) Standards, Principles, and Ethics
(2) Quality Management
(3) Software Processes
(4) Project Management
(5) Measurement
(6) Inspection and Testing
(7) Audits
(8) Configuration Management
The articles are primarily drawn from ASQ's Software Quality Professional magazine, of which this book's editor is editor-in-chief. Among recognizable names of some of the contributing authors - all of whom have published books in their respective areas of expertise - are: Watts Humphrey, William Florac and Anita Carleton, Tom Gilb, Dorothy Graham, and Tim Kasse. All of the other authors are experts in their respective fields as well, which is reflected by the uniformly high quality of writing and knowledge imparted by each of the articles.
I like the careful selection of articles, and the way they are aligned to the Software Quality Engineering Body of Knowledge. Each goes to the heart of the topic area, and also augment the body of knowledge by providing real-world views. Although this book is not intended to be the official study guide for the CSQE exam, the material will certainly reinforce the body of knowledge and better prepare candidates for the exam. For practicing CSQEs this book will provide a handy reference of realistic applications of the body of knowledge on the job. For others in the software quality profession - from testing professional to SQA analysts and engineers - this book gives a solid framework of the profession as a whole. The knowledge and experience imparted by the authors is invaluable.
