Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise Review

Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ruth Reichl's Garlic and Sapphires, an account of her years as restaurant critic of the New York Times, is simultaneously hilarious, refresing and poignant, altogether a five-star read in the light memoir category.
The hilarity comes from Reichl's penchant for donning elaborate disguises, the better to assure anonymity in assessing New York's most prominent eateries. These incognita excursions allow Reichl to skewer the pretensions and omissions of such well-known restaurants as Le Cirque and Tavern on the Green.
Garlic and Sapphires sets a refreshing tone due to Reichl's insistence on recognizing excellent dining in all of its venues, from humble ethnic restaurants to New York's most elegant establishments. Reichl's penchant for ferreting out little-known gems earns her the opprobrium of Bryan Miller, her predecessor as the Times's restaurant critic, and his supporters, all of whom charge Reichl with "letting down standards". But the many New Yorkers who experience life without expense account or trust fund appreciate her excursions to the wrong side of the tracks to identify dining delights.
Most important, Garlic and Sapphires provides a poignant look at what it is like to be too old, too unfashionable, or too poor to fully take part in the glories of the Big Apple. Reichl's disguises frequently place her in one or more these overlooked groups, and she provides a sensitive picture of what it is like to be marginalized-- not only by headwaiters at four-star dining establishments, but by society. One hopes that Reichl's tenure as Times restaurant critic made top restaurants more likely to treat all of their patrons with dignity and respect.
Garlic and Sapphires led me to develop the following advice for restaurant patrons:
--As Reichl notes, restaurant preferences are subjective. Go to the places you enjoy, rather than the places fashion dictates.
--Restaurants are there to serve you. If you are unhappy about food or service, speak up-- preferably to a manager, if your waiter or waitress hasn't dealt with the problem. Above all, don't be intimidated. If you need instruction on what fork to use or what wine to order, you should be able to ask without embarrassment.
--You are especially entitled to fine service and cooking in a top restaurant-- don't let the establishment off the hook. If you have arrived on time for your reservation (or called ahead to notify the restaurant if you are delayed) and behaved courteously, any lapses in food or service reflect a deficiency in the restaurant, not a deficiency in you.
--At least in the U.S., tips are discretionary. If you're not happy, reduce the tip accordingly. Feel free to advise your friends of the restaurant's shortcomings. And fortunately, you're not a critic who must return to give the establishment a fair chance. If you're not happy, you need never darken its doorstep again.
One final piece of advice-- if you enjoy books about the food world, read Garlic and Sapphires.

Automated Testing Handbook Review

Automated Testing Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When this slender book was first published mainstream software test automation was like the weather - everyone talked about it, but nobody seemed to be doing anything about it. The author is a pioneer in software test automation, and wisely wrote a book that still has something valid to say seven years after it was first published.
What you'll get from this book is a clear and complete description of key characteristics and features to look for in an automated test suite. Although one would think that every test group has been automated by now, that is sadly not the case, and this book will give you the foundation for the business case for implementation.
Parts that I especially like (and which every test manager should read) deal with the critical success factors for test management, including maintaining a test dictionary, managing the testing artifact library, and change and version control. These functions are essential to any well run test organization, regardless of whether the organization is automated or using manual methods. However, the emphasis on them reinforce your case for automation because manual methods are more prone to errors and are significantly more labor intensive.
I also like the clear explanation of the test automation process and the elements and activities that are associated. If you mentally compare your testing organization against this process you will get many ideas for improvements, as well as form a vision for an encompassing testing process - even if it will remain manual. The final part of the book deals with defect tracking, metrics and reporting. This material describes best practices in both manual and automated organizations, and is as valid today as it was when this book was first written seven years ago.
While there are more modern books on the subject, they go too far into details for readers who need to quickly get up to speed on the key points. This book does that. When you're ready for a more in-depth book I recommend "Automated Software Testing: Introduction, Management, and Performance" by Elfriede Dustin, Jeff Rashka and John Paul.

How to Automate Software TestingWhy isn't automated testing a reality? In an age of rapid development in increasingly complex environments, automation is the only real hope for achieving any acceptable level of test coverage. Yet, even with all of the tools and technology available, the overwhelming amount of testing is still done manually. The good news is when it does succeed, software test automation reaps huge rewards. But it's like anything--if you've never done it before, you must learn through trial and error. The problem is you don't have time to make mistakes. The stakes are too high, and you can't afford technology that won't save you time and money. Instead, get the benefit of the experiences of hundreds of companies who have implemented automated testing-- what worked, what didn't and why. Perfumes: The Guide Review

Perfumes: The Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Turin argues in his earlier book, _The Secret of Scent_, that smell is not so much about memory and biology, as is widely believed, as it is about beauty and imagination. He believes, furthermore, that one of the highest achievements in perfumery is what he terms "abstraction," that is to say, the creation of olfactory accords that, while perhaps alluding to natural smells, are novel and resistant to definition. These aesthetic axioms (which he presumably shares with co-author/wife Tania Sanchez) are the basis of the evaluations in this book, and we, as readers, have no choice but to take them or leave them. These axioms lead the authors to prefer complex fragrances over simple ones, fragrances that develop over time to linear ones, original and/or unique fragrances over skillful executions of old ideas, "interesting" (even if vaguely unpleasant) fragrances over boring (even if pleasant) ones, etc. In a nutshell, they apply the same standards to perfume that other critics usually apply to other arts. They want perfumery to be taken seriously as an art form, and say as much.
This is a legitimate view, and one to which I am highly sympathetic. That said, I think the authors overlook (or deliberately ignore) some of the factors that render the purely aesthetic appreciation of perfume difficult at best. First of all, perfumes are made to be worn. The final aesthetic effect of a fragrance is inseparable from the time, place, and person(s) involved. Of course this "framing" or contextualization effect is at work in all art forms, but it is arguably more important for perfumery than for others. Given the fact that perfumes are mixtures of chemicals, factors such as temperature, humidity, skin pH, decomposition, underlying body odor, age-related hyposmia, differing olfactory thresholds, etc., make this state-dependence even more crucial. And, regardless of what Turin might say, it is simply impossible to separate a fragrance from the associations (read: memories) it may evoke. Perhaps it's possible to "see" the Platonic form of a perfume behind all of these contingencies, but I highly doubt it. Our reactions to smells are visceral before they're intellectual or aesthetic, no doubt because our sense of smell is our primary sentinel against many toxins and pathogens. Individual differences in sensitivity to certain aromatic chemicals are highly significant and render any kind of objective discussion of fragrances impossible. We're not even working with the same equipment--it's like a society of people who are all partially blind to different colors trying to discuss color coordination. The fundamental variability of our olfactory apparatus, even before differences in taste are taken into account, makes the arrogance of some of the pronouncements in this book a bit galling.
People *wear* fragrances (as opposed to sniffing them on strips--decidedly a minority pastime) for a variety of reasons: to make a statement, to find comfort or stimulation, to complement a particular ensemble, to seduce (and here the tastes of the quarry count far more than Apollonian meditations on beauty), and even, in some parts of the world, to mask the fact that they haven't bathed (it's no wonder that perfumery reached its pinnacle in Europe, where people didn't--and sometimes still don't--bathe regularly). Most people simply want a fragrance to make the day a little more pleasant for themselves and for those around them, not because they want to wear a work of "art" whose complexity and depth are going to make heads turn or spark a discussion about the relative merits of gourmand chypres and aromatic fougeres. Hence the incomprehension and hurt feelings that have greeted some of the harsher reviews in this book.
Assuming that one buys into the premise that perfume is a pure art, the authors, in general, seem to have excellent (i.e., informed, refined, and considered) taste--except when it comes to reviewing the work of their friends. Turin, for example, rates Calice Becker's Beyond Paradise Men as one of the top ten masculines currently in production. Since it isn't very expensive I decided to take a chance and buy it blind on his recommendation. The highly synthetic headache-in-a-bottle I got stuck with isn't terrible, I suppose, but if it's one of the top ten masculines that money can buy in early 2008, then I'm Jacques Guerlain. In a different part the book I discovered that Turin is good friends with Becker. Ah ha... I don't mean to suggest that Turin was cynically shilling for a friend, but rare is the man who is immune to the tender, insidious persuasions of friendship. I'm certain no one else on the planet would rate that fragrance quite so highly. Such are the dangers inherent in taking the word of a consummate industry insider without a huge grain of salt. Turin also awards points for historical importance to fragrances he can't even stand to be around--Opium, for example. This, I think, is taking the "perfume as art" shtick a little too far. When reviewing fragrances that knock their socks off (especially a fragrance saturated with some deep personal significance) both authors (but Sanchez in particular) tend to wax poetic and come off the rails in terms of actually describing the fragrance. Some of this lyricism is quite affecting, but alas too much of it sounds like an exercise for a creative writing workshop, and the straining for effect turns tiresome. The humor, too, is witty in spots but tends consistently towards juvenile mockery and inane plays on perfumes' names.
All of these caveats aside, this is a very informative and often entertaining book. If you love fragrances, it is clearly a must-buy because it offers an excellent idea of which to sample next. If it educates consumers to stop buying and chides producers to stop making the cheap and and often hideous potions flooding the market, it will have done its job. I've learned a lot from the book and am grateful to the authors for having written it, but in the end it's more trustworthy as a Baedeker than as a Michelin.

I've known David Harbour for many years. His deep understanding of optical shop methods and testing has been evidenced by the incredible telescopes that he has made. David has clearly walked the walk.
This work is destined to go down in history alongside the works of Draper, Ellison, Porter and Ingalls.
This book goes into the intricacies of setting up the test and understanding and interpreting the results. The reader will be left with a fine understanding of optical testing without being intimidated by complex mathematical formula.
I highly recommend this book!

David A. Harbour presents a brilliant narrative for the Amateur Telescope Maker (ATM), on exactly how the "Foucault Test" is interpreted.Through a series of "foundation lessons" Mr. Harbour ensures the ATM understands what the Foucault Test is revealing, and what to do about it as he figures the telescope mirror to achieve the perfect paraboloid.Imagine if the makers of the Hubble Space Telescope had used this book as a guide to test the HST's primary before launch! The savings would have been in the millions!Well, that may be a stretch, but for the ATM, who has taken on the delightful but challenging task of making his own telescope mirror, how nice it would be to have a guide to ensure success!.Success is at hand.Dave Harbour presents a thorough and informative instruction on just how to be sure the mirror is perfect! This book is for the ATM bookshelf to accompany the classics of Porter, Texereau and others.

Game Testing All in One (Game Development Series) Review

Game Testing All in One (Game Development Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Traditional program testing has come a long way in 50 years but the complexity, time constraints and variety of situations facing game testers is at the edge of the software testing world.
The authors combine authentic experience with Computer Games and Game Testing in a logical, pragmatic and interesting way. They long ago reasoned that it is very costly (if not sometimes impossible) to test all possible paths through a game's options and through the application of some insightful statistical approaches present ways to reduce the total number of tests required under certain assumptions. To me this one insight was worth the cost of the book.
Beyond this outstanding statistical testing insight for the workers in the field, the expository material that covers Games is exceptionally good for the individual trying to put the whole field in perspective. In Part I they address "Being a Game Tester" (with a side venture later in the book to identify different game testing personalities) followed by a good discussion of "Why Testing is Important". Part II talks about the "Making of a Game" while Part III introduces the concepts and vocabulary of Testing. In Part IV the authors bring in the concept of Combinatorial Testing ( another statistical approach) and present it in a step by step way so that the tester can perform the testing suite without knowing all of the theory behind that approach. "Test Flow Diagrams", "Cleanroom Testing" and "Test Trees" adds very modern disciplined techniques to the testing tool process that will prove of value. Part V discusses some advanced testing ideas all of which are very practical in the fast evolving world of Games.
The authors seem to have been brought together and inspired to write just at the time when the field realizes that loosely structured ad-hoc testing may be costing more than the field can afford.

What do applesauce, cinnamon, chocolate and creme de menthe have in common? How about amaretto, hazelnuts and sourdough bread crumbs? They are the unusual - yet delicious - ingredients included in the makings of an Applesauce Chocolate Cake (#44) and a Chocolate Orange-Flavored Cake with Hazelnuts (#138). They are but two of the unique recipes found in 1001 Chocolate Treats. First of all, the names of the various cookies, pies, cakes and ice creams alone can make you mad with anticipation, but the full-color illustrations of the treats are what propelled me out the door in search of an all-night supermarket stocked with kiwi fruit in the middle of March! Pictures are important. As one ancient Chinese proverb puts it: "If it don't pass the eye test, it will never make it to the taste test." (Actually, my mom used to say that - and, yes, she is Chinese.) However, the photos aren't so sophisticated that you feel as though you have to have a degree in culinary arts in order to try out the recipes in your own kitchen. They look like treats that anyone's grandmother can make - it's just that we may never have thought of using sourdough crumbs in a chocolate cake before. And if cakes don't do it for you, how about a slice of Chocolate Cherry Truffle Pie (#580) or White Chocolate Pie (#645-my favorite)? In any case, the book is definitely a delight to read and the recipes, easy to follow. Chocolate- lovers would do well to add it to their collection. Actually, there are 1010 recipes in the book. Apparently, the editors had a hard time deciding which recipes to exclude. You will see why.

When I first bought this book, I regretted it to an extent because I felt I had made a mistake in choosing; more people in my class had purchased the 5 Steps to a 5 series book on AP Psych, however I was wrong. This book not only became an important part in my individual study process, but when a piece of information was necessary, the class and the teacher had depended on me to look it up in this book. It covers everything and the practice tests get you "in the zone". Unfortunately, I don't know what I got on the A.P. test itself since I just took it, but I can say that I was super-confident, and this book was a major reason for that.
Update : I recieved a 5 on the AP test, thanks in part to this book. Shocker of the year. Hope this helps someone make a decision in buying a study guide. Good luck!

John Stokes has endeavoured to tell the story of the vacuum tube from its earliest beginnings up till the demise of the this technology. The technical content is pitched to the collector and includes many excellent photographs showing the evolution of the myriad of tubes produced. The writing style tends towards being opinionated in some areas where a more dispassionate style would be easier to read. Overall a must have book as it tends to emphasize the years 1930-1950 which are not covered by "The Saga of the Vacuum Tube"

Low-Fat Cooking to Beat the Clock Review

Low-Fat Cooking to Beat the Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book contains many very clever, tasty, healthy entrees that can be prepared quickly, but realistically not in 15 minutes. These are not "meat & potatoes" recipes -- they presume a well-stocked and diverse pantry. Everything that I have made so far has worked and been delicious. The author employs a "mis en place" cooking style and his clock doesn't start running until all the prep work is done. I suppose if there were a prep chef in my house, I could do the cooking in 15 minutes too. On the other hand, all the recipes can be completed in 30 minutes or less and that's fine by me. One really annoying "technical" nit -- many of the recipes have the ingredients list on one page and the instructions on the following page -- meaning that I am constantly flipping back & forth to follow the recipe. Really annoying for a "quick" cookbook. I would consider this the fault of the publisher not the author. If it weren't for this serious flaw, I would give this book 5 stars.
